Set the outgoing video dimensions in FFmpeg with a video scale filter such as -vf "scale=1280:720". YouTube usually detects the resolution and frame rate it receives; changing a YouTube setting alone does not resize FFmpeg’s output. The VPS must also be able to encode the chosen settings in real time and send the resulting bitrate reliably.
Set the output resolution in FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -vf option applies a video filter to the output. For 720p, use -vf "scale=1280:720"; for 1080p, use -vf "scale=1920:1080". Place the filter in the output video path, and make sure it applies to the intended video stream. See the FFmpeg documentation for command-line and filter details.
Here is an illustrative RTMPS command shape for a 30 fps H.264 stream. It is not a tested recipe or a universal bitrate prescription: adapt it to your input, audio, encoder, YouTube ingest details, and the VPS’s measured capacity.

Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or leave it in logs or scripts other people can read. Preserve the source aspect ratio
A fixed width and height can stretch or squash video if the source has a different aspect ratio. To target a 720-pixel height while letting FFmpeg calculate a width that preserves the source proportions, use -vf "scale=-2:720". The -2 form rounds the derived width to an even number suitable for common encoders. If the output must fit a fixed canvas, use scaling plus padding rather than distorting the picture. Check the input’s actual dimensions and aspect ratio, and verify the installed FFmpeg build’s filter syntax with its local help or documentation.
Make the FFmpeg output and YouTube ingest settings agree
In the normal workflow, FFmpeg sends an encoded stream with particular dimensions and frame rate, and YouTube detects those incoming properties automatically. YouTube’s Live Control Room also supports manual resolution settings for a custom stream key. If using that workflow, create the custom key and turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution; otherwise, set the dimensions in FFmpeg and confirm the incoming stream is detected as expected. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations below are for the incoming live stream, not guarantees of visual quality, VPS encoding speed, or the resolution every viewer will receive. YouTube transcodes live input for playback. The following recommended video bitrates are from its guidance checked on October 3, 2026:

These are recommendations, not mandatory minimums. Match the selected resolution and frame rate to the stream’s content, the encoder’s real-time performance, and available outbound capacity. Leave headroom above the combined audio and video bitrate; the network needs to carry both, along with protocol overhead.

Codec, frame rate, and keyframes
- Codec and transport: For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. The sample uses H.264 and AAC; confirm the codec supported by your chosen FFmpeg encoder and workflow.
- Frame rate: YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Use
-rto set the outgoing rate when appropriate, but do not assume a higher frame rate is better if the source or VPS cannot sustain it. - Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. In the sample,
-g 60at 30 fps sets a 60-frame GOP, equivalent to two seconds;-keyint_min 60and-sc_threshold 0are encoder options used to keep that interval consistent. Check the options supported by your selected encoder. - Other video guidance: YouTube’s advanced recommendations include progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Apply these only when they fit your source and encoder workflow.
Check whether the OVHcloud VPS can sustain the stream
Scaling changes output dimensions, but encoding that output is a separate workload. Higher resolution can require more CPU for software encoding and a higher video bitrate for comparable quality. A VPS’s advertised public bandwidth does not establish that its CPU can encode a particular resolution and frame rate in real time, or that the full network allocation is continuously available to your process.

Those provider-listed specifications are not independent performance tests. Before an event, run the intended input, resolution, frame rate, audio, and encoder on the actual VPS. Watch CPU and network use, and monitor the stream’s health in YouTube. OVHcloud says its Control Panel can monitor CPU, RAM, and network status; the current OVHcloud VPS page is the place to check displayed plans and terms.
When hardware acceleration may help
OVHcloud separately offers Cloud GPU instances for video processing and streaming, and describes its L4 GPU offering as supporting hardware H.264, HEVC, and AV1 encoding and decoding. A GPU is not required just to apply FFmpeg’s scale filter. Consider this route only if testing shows the software-encoding workload needs acceleration, and verify the GPU model and regional availability in OVHcloud’s current Cloud GPU information and deployment documentation.

Test the stream and diagnose common problems
YouTube advises: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Test with audio and motion similar to the intended content, then monitor stream health and messages during the event. A speed test helps assess network capacity; it does not test whether FFmpeg can encode the chosen video in real time.
- YouTube shows the wrong resolution: Inspect FFmpeg’s startup or output logs, or probe the resulting stream, to confirm the encoded dimensions. Check that the scale filter is applied to the video stream being sent. If using a manual custom stream key, check its Stream Resolution setting; otherwise, YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate.
- The image looks stretched: Check the source aspect ratio. Replace a fixed width-and-height scale that changes proportions with a ratio-preserving expression such as
scale=-2:720. If a fixed delivery canvas is necessary, scale proportionally and pad the remaining area. - YouTube reports a bitrate or ingest issue: Verify the ingest address and stream key, then check codec, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against the current YouTube guidance for the chosen output. Ensure measured outbound capacity has headroom for audio and video together.
- FFmpeg falls behind or the stream stutters: Observe actual CPU and network use on the VPS. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or encoding complexity and test again; if needed, assess a supported hardware encoder. Do not infer real-time encoding performance from the advertised bandwidth allocation alone.
- The stream fails during a test or event: Read YouTube’s stream-health messages, confirm the key and ingest configuration, and repeat the test with representative audio and motion before going live again.
