Open the Pause Menu and choose Settings to adjust GTAV’s controls, camera, and display options. Rockstar says settings can be changed in Story Mode or Online, though the exact labels and available options can vary by platform and edition.
Open the settings menu
- Open the Pause Menu while in Story Mode or GTA Online.
- Select Settings.
- Choose the relevant category, such as Controls, Camera, or Display.
Rockstar’s GTAV settings instructions, last updated April 20, 2024, confirm this route. They do not provide a complete platform-by-platform list of every available option.
Switch camera perspective
Use the default first-person perspective toggle for your platform. These are Rockstar-listed defaults; a remapped control may use a different input.
- PC: V
- PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4: Touchpad
- Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One: Select
Rockstar lists perspective switching as supported on these platforms. If the default input does not work, check your control configuration and any custom remapping.

Find the vehicle controls
The Controls screen can show different configurations depending on whether your character is on foot or in a vehicle. To view vehicle controls, get into a vehicle before opening the settings.
- Enter a vehicle.
- Open Pause Menu > Settings.
- Open the control configuration and inspect the vehicle inputs shown there.
Rockstar’s vehicle-controls instructions, last updated February 29, 2024, warn that changing controls while in a vehicle affects on-foot controls, and changing them on foot affects vehicle controls. Make adjustments deliberately, then check both configurations.

Understand why Online aim settings change
GTA Online aim preferences are tied to Story Mode and session context. Rockstar says aim settings are imported from Story Mode when an Online session starts. It also notes that joining another player’s multiplayer lobby can make your settings default to the host’s selection.
If your aim preference keeps changing, go offline to modify it, then check it again in the Online session. Rockstar also suggests creating lobbies to avoid settings changing in multiplayer lobbies. See its GTA Online aim-settings guidance, last updated March 8, 2024.

Adjust display options
Change map measurement units
For kilometers instead of miles, open Pause Menu > Settings > Display and change Measurement System between Metric and Imperial. Rockstar says this choice saves automatically.
Fix content cut off at the screen edges
If text or interface elements are clipped by your television, open Pause Menu > Settings > Display and adjust Safezone Size. This changes how content sits near the screen edges. The available controls and their presentation can differ by edition or platform.
