Open MSI Afterburner, click the Settings gear, open User Interface, choose a theme under User interface skinning properties, preview it, then click Apply and OK. If the tab is not visible, use the small tab arrows or widen the settings window.
Change the built-in MSI Afterburner skin
- Launch MSI Afterburner (not RivaTuner Statistics Server).
- Click the Settings gear icon.
- Open the User Interface tab. It is often the far-right tab; use the left/right navigation arrows if it is hidden.
- Find User interface skinning properties.
- Open the skin drop-down list and select a theme. MSI’s guide describes this list as the place to preview the available appearance: MSI Afterburner support guide.
- Click Apply if your release provides that button, then click OK to close Settings. Some releases apply the selection when you click OK alone.
The skin changes the Afterburner desktop window—its colors, fonts, graphics, control arrangement and sometimes its size. It does not change your GPU settings or add hardware capabilities.
Which skin should you choose?
The list depends on the Afterburner build and the skin files included with it. MSI’s current page listed 4.6.6 Final and 4.6.7 Beta on August 18, 2026, but beta contents and bundled themes can change: MSI Afterburner official page.

Choose a modern, readable skin first if you use a newer GPU or multiple fan controls. A legacy theme can resemble a video you are following while placing, hiding or failing to represent newer controls in the same way.

Skin versus the in-game overlay
An Afterburner skin changes the application window, not necessarily the statistics overlay shown over a game. To change overlay text color, position, size or presentation, configure Afterburner’s monitoring options together with RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS). MSI documents RTSS as the tool for those OSD presentation settings: MSI’s technical guide.
- Desktop window appearance: MSI Afterburner’s User Interface skin setting.
- In-game OSD appearance: Monitoring selections in Afterburner plus RTSS’s overlay settings.
- RTSS control-panel appearance: Separate from the Afterburner skin.
Install a custom skin cautiously
Built-in themes are the safest option. For a third-party skin, the general community procedure is to place the skin files in the Skins folder inside the specific MSI Afterburner installation that you launch, then select it from User Interface. The installation directory can differ because of a custom installer location or Windows architecture, so use the folder shown by your shortcut or installation settings rather than assuming a universal path.

- Close MSI Afterburner completely.
- Obtain the skin from a source you can verify. Do not run an unknown executable advertised as a skin installer.
- If the download is an archive, extract its skin files into that installation’s Skins folder. Historical community discussions describe this folder-based approach: Guru3D forum discussion. An older community-preserved technical reference mentions
.USFfiles in the application’sSkinssubfolder, but it is not a current first-party consumer guide: skin-format reference. - Reopen Afterburner and return to Settings → User Interface.
- Select the new entry, click Apply if available, then OK. Restart Afterburner if the window does not refresh immediately.
A ZIP is easier to inspect than an executable pack, but no download is automatically safe. MSI warns about fake Afterburner sites distributing modified installers and identifies MSI.com and Guru3D as legitimate distribution sources. Use MSI’s official page or Guru3D’s Afterburner download page for the application itself.
If User Interface is missing
- Confirm that the window is MSI Afterburner, not RTSS.
- Maximize or widen the Settings window.
- Use the small left/right tab arrows to reach the far-right tab.
- Look for User Interface; tab order can differ between releases.
- Restart Afterburner after selecting a skin.
If your skin is not listed
- Close Afterburner.
- Check that the files were extracted, rather than left inside the downloaded archive.
- Verify that they are in the Skins folder belonging to the installation you actually launch.
- Reopen Afterburner and check the drop-down again.
- If it still does not appear, use a built-in theme. The file may be incompatible with the current skin engine or release.
There is no universal guarantee that an old community skin works with every current build. Do not execute an unknown installer just to force a cosmetic theme to appear.

If the interface is too small or controls disappear
Switch to a Big or enlarged edition, or to a modern high-DPI-compatible skin, if one is available. If a slider, fan option or monitoring control seems to vanish, first restore the default or a current full-featured skin. Skins can rearrange or fail to expose controls, but they cannot create unsupported voltage, fan or power functions. Then check the GPU’s capabilities, Afterburner settings and driver support.

If the change does not stick
- Select the skin again.
- Click Apply when that button is present.
- Click OK to close Settings.
- Close and relaunch Afterburner; reboot Windows only if necessary.
- For persistent installation problems, uninstall and reinstall from MSI.com or Guru3D. Guru3D describes clean reinstalling as a broader remedy for serious Afterburner/RTSS update issues, not the first step for an ordinary skin-selection problem: Guru3D download guidance.
