Your Xbox sign-in is part of your personal Microsoft account, not a separate Xbox email-and-password account. To change the email, add an alias to that same account and make it primary if you want; to change the password, use Microsoft account Security. Keeping the existing account preserves its Xbox identity and entitlements.
Before you start
- Use the Microsoft account already connected to your Xbox profile. Creating another account just to use a new email can leave purchases, subscriptions, and progress on the old account.
- Have access to a Microsoft verification method if possible. If you are still signed in on your Xbox but cannot access the old email, keep that console signed in until you have confirmed a working recovery method.
- Manage the account on Microsoft’s website. Console menus and labels can differ by generation and system update.
For personal Xbox use, the Microsoft account holds the sign-in details and account data; its email addresses are called aliases. Aliases share one password and the account’s settings, subscriptions, storage, and Xbox access. Microsoft lists Xbox among the services you can use with a personal Microsoft account (Microsoft account sign-in; Microsoft account aliases).
Change the email address linked to Xbox
The practical way to switch to a new email is to add it as an alias to your existing Microsoft account. An alias can be a new Outlook.com address or an existing address from another provider, such as Gmail or Yahoo, subject to Microsoft’s account rules and availability.
- Open Microsoft’s Manage how you sign in to Microsoft page and sign in to the account connected to your Xbox profile.
- Select Add email, enter the new address, and follow the verification instructions. Microsoft’s alias instructions explain the available choices.
- If you want the new address to be the main sign-in identity shown in Microsoft account contexts, select Make primary or the equivalent primary-alias option.
- Test signing in with the new address before removing the old alias or blocking its sign-in.
Adding an alias does not create a new Xbox profile. It remains the same Microsoft account, so the gamertag, purchases, subscriptions, cloud data, and account settings remain associated with it. Making an alias primary changes which address is the main one; it does not change the gamertag.

Keep, remove, or block the old address
You can leave the old alias attached, remove it, or—where Microsoft offers the option—block it from signing in while retaining it on the account. Do not remove it as your first step: first verify the new alias and confirm you can sign in with it. Removing an alias detaches that address from the account and may affect future sign-in or access. See Microsoft’s guidance on blocking sign-in for an alias.
Change a password you know
- Go to Microsoft account Security and sign in.
- Select Change password.
- Enter the current password, then enter and confirm the new password.
- Save the change. If Xbox asks you to sign in again, use the new password.
This changes the password for the Microsoft account, including all its aliases. Other Microsoft services and saved credentials on browsers, phones, or consoles may also require you to sign in again; a password change does not change your email alias or gamertag. Microsoft’s password guidance covers the account password process.

Reset a forgotten password
- From Microsoft’s sign-in page, select Forgot password?
- Enter the account email address, phone number, or Skype name requested by the flow.
- Choose an available verification method, receive the code, and enter it.
- Follow the prompts to create and save a new password.
Microsoft requires identity verification before a reset. If none of the displayed methods are accessible or recognizable, use the Microsoft sign-in helper and recovery guidance. Microsoft support agents cannot send a password-reset link or directly change account details on your behalf.
If you can use Xbox but cannot access the old email
Being signed in on a console does not necessarily bypass Microsoft’s identity checks. While you still have access, visit Microsoft account Security and add a current verification method if the account allows it. Confirm that the new method works before signing out of your only accessible device. Microsoft documents email, Microsoft Authenticator, passkeys, and other security methods, with availability depending on the account and current policy (security information and verification codes).

If no usable method is available, follow the sign-in helper or account recovery process rather than trying to change the identity from the Xbox console. Account recovery still requires Microsoft to verify that you own the account.
If you forgot the email address
A gamertag identifies your Xbox gaming profile, but it is not itself the Microsoft sign-in address. To find the account email, check devices already signed in to Microsoft, inboxes where Microsoft or Xbox messages may have arrived, and Microsoft purchase receipts. Microsoft also lists places to check in its account-discovery guidance. Use Microsoft’s recovery tools if those checks do not identify the account.

What changes—and what stays the same
- Change an alias on the existing account: The account remains the one holding your Xbox profile and entitlements. Microsoft says aliases share account data and settings.
- Create a separate Microsoft account: This creates a separate identity; do not expect the old account’s Xbox purchases, progress, subscriptions, or history to transfer automatically. Personal and work or school accounts cannot be merged (Microsoft’s account-type explanation).
- Change the email or primary alias: This does not change the gamertag. A Microsoft account display name is also distinct from the gamertag (Microsoft account name guidance).
- Change the password: This replaces the shared account password. Xbox or other Microsoft services may ask you to authenticate again, but the change is not a gamertag or alias change.
Troubleshoot common problems
The verification code does not arrive
- Check the spam or junk folder and confirm you entered the intended address.
- Check whether the new email is already associated with another Microsoft account. Make sure you are editing the personal account used for Xbox, not a work or school account.
- Use a different verification method shown for your account if one is available. An alias belonging to the same account cannot be added as a separate verification method.
Microsoft explains available methods and verification-code issues in its security-information guidance. A personal Microsoft account and a work or school account are separate account types, not accounts you can merge.
The new email is already in use
The address may already belong to another personal Microsoft account, or may be associated with a work or school account. Check which account you are signed into before making changes. Microsoft says personal and work or school accounts cannot be merged (account-type guidance).

Xbox will not accept the new credentials
Confirm that the new address is an alias on the Microsoft account that owns the Xbox profile, then try that address with the account’s shared password. If Microsoft asks for verification, complete its identity check. Avoid removing the old alias until sign-in with the new one is confirmed; console labels and prompts can vary.
Xbox 360 with two-step verification
Xbox 360 may require an app password when two-step verification is enabled and the console cannot use the normal sign-in flow. Follow Microsoft’s current app-password instructions only if the Xbox 360 sign-in process requires it. Do not use an app password for Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S unless Microsoft’s sign-in flow specifically directs you to.
Secure the account after the change
Changing the email alone does not secure an account if the old address or password may be compromised. Use the Security page to update recovery information, review recent sign-in activity and devices, and consider blocking sign-in through a compromised old alias if that option is available. Microsoft supports additional verification methods, including Authenticator and passkeys; a passkey uses a device credential such as biometrics or a PIN where supported and is described by Microsoft as a phishing-resistant alternative to passwords (Microsoft security information guidance). Never share your password or verification codes.
