You can’t choose an arbitrary theme color on PS5 with a color wheel. To change the console’s look, go to Settings → System → Appearance → Appearance and Sound and choose from the designs available on your console. For a custom home-screen picture, use the Welcome hub; for display color and contrast changes, use Accessibility settings.
Change the PS5 interface design
Sony’s current support instructions offer preset PlayStation-generation designs, not a general custom accent-color or downloadable-theme selector. The Appearance setting applies a design to the home screen and other system areas; it does not recolor games. Sony’s Welcome hub instructions explain the setting.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Appearance.
- Choose Appearance and Sound.
- Select one of the designs shown on your console, then return to the home screen to see it.
Sony announced designs inspired by the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 in an April 23, 2025 PlayStation Blog post. The choices shown can depend on system software, region, or later updates, so use the options currently displayed on your console.
Change the Welcome hub background
The Welcome hub’s background is separate from the overall interface design. Open the Welcome hub from the home screen, select Change Background, then choose an image from From PlayStation, Games, or Media Gallery. You can use slideshow mode to rotate through an album. The hub also has Showcase mode, which displays the background more prominently while the console is idle; some Welcome hub features may vary by region. See Sony’s Welcome hub guide.

Change screen colors for visibility
For accessibility or legibility rather than cosmetic customization, open Settings → Accessibility → Display and Sound. Sony lists these options in its PS5 accessibility settings guide:
- Invert Colors reverses text and background colors. Sony says enabling it turns off HDR.
- Color Correction offers alternative color options; enable the filter and adjust its intensity.
- High Contrast changes text and background colors to improve legibility.
These are display settings, not interface themes. They can change how games and media appear, so they may not suit ordinary gaming or video playback.

Can you change the console light color?
The documented PS5 setting adjusts the power indicator’s brightness, not its color. Go to Settings → System → Beep and Light → Brightness and choose Dim, Medium, or Bright. Sony documents these controls in its beep and light guide.

If Appearance is missing
Update the console and restart before trying more disruptive troubleshooting. The update labels may change with system software; Sony’s documented manual route is:

- Connect the PS5 to the internet.
- Open Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings → Update System Software.
- After the update completes, restart the console and check Settings → System → Appearance again.
See Sony’s system software update instructions. If the menu remains absent, the feature or its availability may depend on installed software, account region, or rollout timing. Avoid initializing the console as a first response.
If updating and restarting do not resolve the issue, Restore Default Settings is a later option: Settings → System → System Software → Reset Options → Restore Default Settings. Sony says this returns affected settings to factory versions without deleting user or game data; it is different from resetting or initializing the console, which can delete data. Game colors are controlled separately
The PS5 Appearance setting changes the console interface, not a game’s graphics or menus. Check the individual game’s settings for any color, contrast, or interface options it provides.
