To change what viewers see without ending a YouTube live event, switch the active video, scene, or playlist in the encoder or playout software that is sending the stream. Keep that software connected and streaming to the existing YouTube event. YouTube Studio does not document a universal control for swapping a file inside every third-party encoder.
Change the video in the software sending your stream
YouTube receives a feed from your encoder through a stream URL and stream key. Change the media in that encoder’s production or playback controls; don’t stop the encoder or end the event just to replace the content. The precise controls depend on the software and how the current stream is configured.
In OBS: prepare a file or playlist
- Prepare the next video. Add it as a Media Source, or create a VLC Video source and add the files to its playlist. OBS documents looping and restart-on-activation controls for Media Sources. Its VLC Video source supports a media playlist and a Loop Playlist option; VLC must be installed for the source to appear.
- Choose how to make the handoff. For a controlled visual transition, place each video in its own scene or arrange the sources in a scene. Preview the intended output before switching. OBS scenes are layouts that hold sources such as media and devices.
- Switch the content while output continues. Select the scene containing the next video, or advance the VLC playlist. Keep OBS streaming to YouTube. This follows from YouTube’s encoder-feed model and OBS’s media controls; it is not a platform-guaranteed procedure for every OBS configuration.
- Check the result. Confirm the new video and its audio in the preview and monitor the outgoing stream. Don’t reset or change the stream key as part of an ordinary media switch; YouTube documents resetting a key for situations such as a compromised key.
For other encoders or playout setups
Use the playback or production controls for the source currently sending the feed. The steps differ if the input is a local file, playlist, browser source, capture feed, or cloud playout source, and menus vary by software version and operating system. If the encoder does not offer a way to replace or advance its source during output, consult its documentation before changing the live setup.
What YouTube Studio controls—and what it does not
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe copying the stream URL and key into encoder settings to connect the encoder. Its help pages also describe ending a stream by stopping the encoder feed or selecting End Stream. They do not document one Studio button that selects a different local file inside every third-party encoder. For a continuing event, change the media in the software that is sending the feed rather than treating Studio as the playback controller.

Plan for the limits of a 24/7 event
- Archive: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24-hour broadcast exceeds that threshold, so keep a local recording if you need an archive.
- DVR: YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers may not be able to rewind through the entire continuous stream.
- Monitoring: After a switch, verify both picture and sound and confirm the encoder continues outputting. YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend monitoring audio and video quality.
