In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live > Stream, find Stream key, and copy the key—or select Reset to generate a new one. Keep the rest of the destination URL and your encoding options unchanged.
Find or reset the key in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab and locate Stream key.
- Copy the current key to use in FFmpeg. To replace a key that is exposed or no longer suitable, select Reset and copy the newly generated key.
Only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; an editor or viewer does not have that permission. YouTube describes the key as password-like, so do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, or recording. If you think it has been exposed, reset it and update the value wherever your encoder stores it. YouTube’s stream setup guidance covers stream-key access and management.
Replace the key in the FFmpeg destination
In a command that includes the key in its output URL, change only the <STREAM_KEY> portion. For example, the destination in this command shows where the key goes:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmps://<YOUTUBE_INGESTION_HOST>/<APP_PATH>/<STREAM_KEY>'Replace the placeholders with the ingestion host, application path, and current key supplied for your YouTube stream. They are illustrative placeholders, not a ready-to-run YouTube endpoint: use the host and path YouTube provides for your stream rather than copying a sample destination. The key change itself is the final URL component; leave the other command options alone unless you are separately troubleshooting encoding or stream health.

FFmpeg places output options before the output URL. The -f flv option specifies an output format; it does not set the stream key. YouTube documents that encoders may take the ingestion URL and stream name in separate fields, or combine them as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Check how your existing FFmpeg command or wrapper expects the destination before editing it. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes output URL placement and options.
If your command uses a separate key field
Some wrappers or scripts keep the server URL and stream key in separate fields, or load the key from an environment variable. In that case, update that field or variable with the current key instead of appending it to the URL. Do not alter unrelated video, audio, or input arguments as part of a key change.

Check the destination protocol and stream health
Keep the protocol and endpoint configuration YouTube specifies. For an RTMPS destination, YouTube specifies the rtmps protocol, a valid YouTube endpoint, the correct application path, and port 443. Do not switch to a different host, path, or protocol based on a generic example. See YouTube’s encoder settings and RTMPS guidance.
If FFmpeg connects but YouTube reports a stream-health problem, changing the key alone may not resolve it. Check the Live Control Room’s health messages and verify the video and audio settings. YouTube identifies possible issues including unsupported codecs, missing audio or video, mismatched secondary streams, and keyframe intervals that are too long. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance explains the settings and health checks.

Troubleshoot a failed key change
- You reset the key, but the old command still fails: A reset replaces the previous credential. Copy the new key from Live Control Room and update the command or separate key field used by the running encoder.
- The command connects to an unexpected destination: Compare the URL’s protocol, host, application path, and key placement with the destination YouTube supplies. Do not assume a sample host or path applies to your stream.
- YouTube shows a health warning after connection: Read the specific stream-health message and check for the codec, missing-stream, secondary-stream, or keyframe issues YouTube lists. A key edit does not change encoding settings.
- You are unsure whether to edit the URL or a separate field: Follow the format the existing FFmpeg invocation or its wrapper uses. YouTube supports both separate URL/key entry and a combined
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAMEform, depending on the encoder. - The key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio, then replace the stored value in every encoder configuration that uses it. Treat the replacement as a secret too.
