To change a live stream’s orientation, change the output layout in the streaming app or platform—not just the way you hold or rotate your phone. Portrait video is typically 9:16; landscape is 16:9. Choose the orientation before going live, then preview the audience-facing output to make sure the framing works.
First, identify which orientation you need to change
Orientation can be set in three different places: the phone’s camera or display, the encoder’s source or canvas, or the streaming platform’s output. Rotating your phone may change how its camera records, but it does not necessarily change a software canvas or the format sent to a platform. The relevant control depends on your streaming workflow.
- Portrait: a vertical 9:16 frame, commonly suited to phone-first viewing.
- Landscape: a horizontal 16:9 frame, commonly used for widescreen streams and gameplay.
- Both: some services can create portrait and landscape outputs at once, but their layouts, supported features, and setup differ.
Choose the right workflow

Change orientation in YouTube Live Control Room
YouTube Help describes streams started from Live Control Room as going live in horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats at once by default. Shorts-feed viewers see the vertical version, while other viewers see horizontal; the stream uses one shared URL and chat. The vertical output starts as a center crop, so check whether important content is cut off.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Set up the stream and inspect the vertical layout. YouTube’s documented layout choices include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked; use the available zoom and position controls to adjust framing.
- Preview both formats. Make sure titles, game HUD elements, faces, and other important content remain visible in the vertical version as well as the horizontal one.
- Start the stream only after the audience-facing previews look right.
For third-party encoder dual streaming, YouTube describes using RTMP(S) and selecting a second stream key for the vertical output. Follow the encoder’s instructions for sending both outputs; a single landscape canvas should not be assumed to produce a correctly composed portrait version.

Set up portrait and landscape in TikTok LIVE Studio
- In TikTok LIVE Studio, right-click the scene you want to use.
- Choose Switch layout, then Dual layout.
- Arrange and check the portrait layout first. Sources and widgets sync to landscape, where you can adjust their size and position separately.
- Review the landscape layout and check which scene elements remain. Chatbox and ranking widgets are removed when switching a landscape scene to dual layout because they are not supported in portrait.
- Preview the result before going live.

Choose an orientation in Restream Studio or Streamlabs Talk Studio
Restream Studio
Assign each connected channel to Portrait or Landscape before starting. Restream’s portrait options are 1080×1920 or 720×1280, both 9:16; landscape is 16:9. Since orientation cannot be switched while live—and some destinations may not support portrait—check each destination’s support and preview before you start. Streamlabs Talk Studio
Select the portrait-mode icon and toggle Portrait or Landscape before going live or starting a recording. Streamlabs says the control cannot be switched once either has started, so verify the choice and preview first. See Streamlabs Talk Studio’s portrait-mode instructions.

Change orientation in a mobile streaming app
Mobile behavior is app-specific. For example, the Roland GO:LIVECAST manual says the app can be used in portrait or landscape and broadcasts in the orientation being used. That does not mean rotating any phone will change every app’s outgoing stream. Check the app’s own preview and orientation settings; the GO:LIVECAST owner’s manual documents that product’s behavior.
Check the framing before you go live
- Preview the actual output for each format and destination, not only the phone screen or the encoder’s source preview.
- Look for content near the left and right edges of a landscape scene: a center crop can exclude it from the vertical output.
- Use fit, zoom, position, or separate layout controls when the platform provides them. Avoid assuming a crop will preserve important game UI or on-screen text.
- For a dual-format stream, check portrait and landscape independently. A layout that works in one can look cramped or incomplete in the other.
- Check destination support: a streaming studio may offer portrait output even when a connected platform does not support it.
Troubleshooting orientation problems
The phone is vertical, but the stream is horizontal
The phone’s rotation may affect its display or camera without changing the encoder canvas or platform output. Change the orientation in the streaming app or platform, then preview the sent output.

The vertical output cuts off the game or presenter
A center crop can remove content at the sides of a landscape composition. Adjust the vertical layout’s crop, zoom, position, or fit setting where available, or arrange a separate portrait layout.
The orientation control is unavailable after starting
Some tools lock the setting during a live broadcast or recording. Restream Studio says orientation cannot be switched while live; Streamlabs Talk Studio says it cannot be switched after going live or starting a recording. End the session and set the desired mode before starting again.

A widget disappears in TikTok LIVE Studio dual layout
Chatbox and ranking widgets are not supported in portrait and are removed when switching a landscape scene to dual layout. Review the portrait scene and adjust the landscape layout after the switch.
A destination does not show portrait video
Platform support varies. Confirm that the destination supports portrait output and that your workflow is configured for it; Restream notes that some platforms may not support portrait video.
