For remote changes, reach the computer running that encoder, make the switch there, and verify the picture and audio. The exact method depends on your encoder and remote-access setup; neither YouTube nor OBS documentation promises gapless switching.
Where to change the video
An encoder-based livestream sends video from streaming software or a standalone hardware encoder to YouTube. The encoder is where the outgoing content is chosen. YouTube Live Control Room handles YouTube-side broadcast tasks such as previewing the incoming feed, going live, monitoring, and ending the stream; its documented encoder workflow does not provide a selector for replacing the video in the encoder feed. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection workflow.
That distinction matters for a 24/7 stream: changing a source is not the same as ending the broadcast and starting another one. Keep the encoder sending its feed while you change the content, then confirm the result at both the encoder and YouTube.
Prepare a replacement video in OBS
OBS builds an output from scenes and sources. A scene can contain a Media Source for a video file; OBS also documents using a VLC video source for a playlist when VLC is installed. See the OBS Sources Guide (published January 11, 2022) for the source concepts and controls.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open the scene that should contain the replacement. In OBS, use the Scenes list to select the scene you want to prepare, or create a separate scene for the alternate content.
- Add the video source. In the Sources list, select the add control and choose Media Source. Configure it to use the intended video file, then check that it appears and plays as expected in the preview. OBS source settings and available options can vary by version.
- For a playlist, use a VLC video source if VLC is installed. Add the VLC source and configure the playlist there. Check the playlist order and playback in OBS before relying on it during a live broadcast.
- Check source visibility and audio. Confirm the intended source is visible in the scene and that its audio is present at the expected level. If you use a separate scene, confirm that scene’s full composition, not just the video clip.
- Test the transition. Switch between the current and replacement content while monitoring the encoder output. The transition and any interruption depend on your OBS configuration; the reviewed documentation does not guarantee a seamless change.
Switch the live video remotely
- Identify the encoder host. Determine whether the stream is being sent by OBS or another software encoder on a computer, or by a standalone hardware encoder. YouTube’s setup guide covers both encoder types and the server URL and stream key used to connect.
- Arrange access to the encoder controls. If you are away from the host computer, remote access to that computer is one possible operational approach. Choose and secure your own remote-access method; the cited YouTube and OBS documentation does not recommend a particular remote-control tool or describe how to configure one.
- Open the encoder and select the prepared content. In OBS, switch to the prepared scene or change the relevant source. Avoid changing the YouTube broadcast controls unless you actually intend to start or end the broadcast.
- Verify the outgoing result. Check the encoder preview or output for the correct picture and audio, then check YouTube’s live preview or player. If the replacement does not appear, verify the active scene, source visibility, playback, and audio at the encoder before making more changes.
Remote access adds a dependency: the host, network connection, encoder, and remote session must all remain usable. Test the exact setup before relying on it for unattended operation. The available documentation does not establish a universal remote workflow or guarantee uninterrupted switching.
Keep YouTube broadcast controls separate
For an encoder stream, YouTube’s documented workflow is to connect the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and select Go live. To end the broadcast, YouTube instructs creators to select End Stream and stop sending content from the encoder. Those are broadcast lifecycle actions, not OBS source switches. Follow YouTube’s encoder instructions for the current setup and ending workflow.

Your encoder needs the YouTube server URL and stream key to send the feed. Treat the key as a credential: do not show it in screenshots, leave it visible during a remote session, or share it with someone who does not need access to the channel’s stream.
Choose a control approach that fits the setup
| Approach | What it changes | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| OBS scene or source switch | Changes the content composed by the software encoder. | Prepare and test the alternate source or scene in OBS; switching behavior depends on configuration. |
| Prepared OBS playlist | Plays a configured sequence through a VLC video source. | OBS documents this option when VLC is installed; check the playlist and playback before the stream depends on it. |
| Remote access to the encoder host | Lets an operator reach the encoder controls from elsewhere. | This is a system-level option, not a YouTube or OBS remote-switch feature documented by the cited guides. Security, access, and continuity depend on your setup. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | Sends the live feed to YouTube without using OBS as the encoder. | YouTube supports hardware encoders, but the controls for changing content depend on the device. Consult its documentation; the cited sources do not specify a universal switching procedure. |
Troubleshoot a change that does not appear
- The YouTube picture stays the same: Confirm you changed the active scene or source in the encoder that is actually sending the stream, rather than only selecting a scene that is not live.
- The replacement source is blank: Check the file selection, source visibility, and OBS preview. For a VLC playlist, confirm VLC is installed and that the playlist source is configured.
- There is no replacement audio: Check the source’s audio and the encoder’s output meters, then verify the result in YouTube’s preview or player.
- The remote session cannot reach the encoder: The switch cannot be made through that route until access to the encoder host is restored. Use an access method you have secured and tested; the cited platform guides do not establish a particular remote-access remedy.
- The stream is interrupted during the change: Switching behavior depends on the encoder configuration. Test transitions before relying on unattended 24/7 operation; the cited documentation makes no gapless-switch guarantee.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to maintaining a home encoder for the stream. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Its first day is free with no card required. The monthly price is $9.99 per month.
