To change the video viewers see without ending a YouTube live stream, switch scenes or video sources in your encoder—such as OBS—and keep the encoder’s stream running. Don’t press Stop Streaming or End Stream; those actions stop the feed or end the event.
What actually changes when you switch videos
YouTube receives the encoded feed from your encoder. The encoder controls what appears in that feed, so change the scene or visible source there while leaving the YouTube connection active. YouTube describes stopping the encoder’s feed as an end-of-stream action, not a way to change the picture. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.
The steps below use OBS Studio. OBS calls a layout of sources a scene; a scene can contain a video file, camera, graphics, or other inputs. The exact menu labels can vary by OBS version, so check the installed version’s interface if a label differs.
Prepare videos in OBS before going live
- Create a scene for each video or layout. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add scenes and give each a distinct name, such as “Opening,” “Gameplay,” or “Break.” Scenes let you prepare different combinations of sources in advance. See the OBS Studio overview.
- Add each video as a Media Source. Select the intended scene, add a Media Source, and choose the video file. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. The Media Source properties include options such as looping and restarting playback when the source becomes active. See OBS Media Sources.
- Choose how the switch should look. You can switch directly to another scene, or use Studio Mode to prepare the next scene in Preview and then transition it to the live output. OBS documents Cut and Fade transitions and lets you configure transition duration in its transition controls.
- Check audio as well as picture. Confirm that each video’s sound is routed into the stream’s audio mix and that the intended sources are audible. A scene change does not guarantee that audio changes the way you expect; OBS’s Sources guide covers source visibility and ordering, while YouTube’s live monetization guidance illustrates that a video overlay and audio configuration can be separate.
Switch videos while the YouTube stream is live
- Connect OBS to YouTube and start the feed. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key in the encoder, then the encoder starts sending the feed. Complete the event’s go-live steps in Live Control Room as prompted. See YouTube’s live stream settings.
- Select the next scene in OBS. If using Studio Mode, select the scene in Preview and check its framing and sources before transitioning it to Program. Without Studio Mode, select the prepared scene directly.
- Transition or cut to the scene. Use the selected transition, or switch directly. If you instead built several videos as sources in one scene, show the desired source and hide the previous one using the source visibility controls.
- Verify the live picture and sound. Check the output in OBS and, where practical, confirm the result in YouTube’s live preview. Listen for the new video’s audio; an image can change while the audio mix remains on the previous source or is muted.
- Keep the encoder session running. Do not select Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in Live Control Room if you only mean to change the video. YouTube’s instruction is: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.”
Choose a switching method for your show
| Method | How it works | Useful when | Check before switching |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate OBS scenes | Each scene contains its own video and layout; select or transition to the next scene. | You want a clean cut or fade and a prepared layout for each segment. | Preview the destination scene if you need to verify it before it goes live; confirm its audio routing. |
| Show or hide sources in one scene | Toggle source visibility while retaining the scene’s other elements. | You want to keep shared overlays or graphics in place while changing a video layer. | Check source order and visibility so the intended video is on top and the old one is no longer visible. |
| Playlist through VLC in OBS | OBS documents playlist support through VLC when VLC is installed. | You want a sequence of files rather than manually selecting every next scene. | Confirm the playlist behavior and audio for your setup before relying on it live; the cited documentation does not establish a universal automatic-switching workflow for every setup. |
These approaches differ in how manually you trigger a change, whether you can preview the next item, and how picture and audio are routed. The appropriate choice depends on the layout and playback behavior you need; the available documentation does not establish one universally best method.

Keep stream settings separate from scene changes
A scene or source change alters the program being encoded. The stream key and stream URL are for sending that program to YouTube; changing or resetting a key is not a video-switching method. If OBS cannot connect, check the current key in Live Control Room and update OBS with it, following YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance.
Plan the stream’s format before going live. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says you cannot add the vertical format after a stream has started. If you need dual horizontal and vertical output, configure it before the event.

Troubleshooting a bad switch
- The YouTube event ended. You may have stopped the encoder or selected End Stream. Reconnect or start a new stream using the encoder and YouTube controls. The cited YouTube guidance does not promise that a concluded event can resume as the same live event.
- The new video appears, but there is no sound. Check the Media Source’s audio and the encoder’s audio mix. Make sure the intended source is not muted and that the new audio is included in the output mix.
- The encoder will not connect. Verify the stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the current key, as advised in YouTube’s troubleshooting guide.
- You mean another YouTube video page, not a file in your production. The documented OBS workflow switches sources supplied to the encoder; it does not establish a universal feature for switching among arbitrary YouTube video pages inside one live event. The video must be supplied by a production setup that sends it in the ongoing feed. Check that setup’s documentation.
- You need a format change after going live. Some choices must be made before the event: YouTube says vertical format cannot be added after the stream starts. End and configure a subsequent event if the required format was not prepared.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
