Yes. In Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics, start a game, hold the Right Stick, press X, then use L or R to cycle through screen colors. Nintendo’s current support instructions also explain how to change text color separately.
Change the screen color during a game
- Open Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics and start a game.
- During gameplay, press and hold the Right Stick.
- While holding it, press X to open the adjustment controls.
- Press L or R to cycle through the available screen colors.
- Follow the on-screen prompt to remove the lens cover to experience the color change.
Nintendo’s instructions do not list every available screen color, so the complete palette is not established. The controls are documented on Nintendo’s support page.
Change the text color separately
To change text rather than the game screen, open Settings in the Virtual Boy software, choose Red or White, then exit Settings. Nintendo says you will be prompted to remove the lens cover after changing the screen or text color.
What Nintendo announced, and what is documented now
On January 27, 2026, Nintendo announced in Japanese that a feature to change the screen from red to another color was planned for 2026, with further details to come. The announcement described a plan at that time; Nintendo’s current support instructions now provide the control steps for changing screen color. The announcement did not specify the full palette. Do you need a Virtual Boy accessory to change colors?
Nintendo presents Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics as a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack benefit for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, and identifies dedicated accessories for the collection: a replica-style Virtual Boy and a cardboard model. Nintendo’s broader collection information discusses dedicated hardware and the stereoscopic 3D experience, but it does not establish that either accessory is required specifically to use the screen-color controls. Keep the accessory requirement for the collection distinct from the software setting itself. Nintendo’s 2025 announcement and Nintendo’s launch announcement
