It costs 100 gold and resets that character to level 1, letting you level them again with new class-based choices. First, you need to find Withers in the Dank Crypt.
How to respec with Withers
- Find Withers in the Dank Crypt. The crypt is accessible early in the game from the Ravaged Beach area. You can enter through the ancient door by the beach, through the chapel entrance that drops into the crypt, or via a hatch along the coast. PC Gamer’s guide to respec in Baldur’s Gate 3 describes these routes.
- Speak to Withers at camp. After your first conversation with him in the Dank Crypt, he becomes available at camp. Talk to him and select the dialogue option to change class.
- Pay 100 gold and rebuild the character. The service resets the selected character to level 1. Level them up again, choosing their class and other progression options as you go. The listed fee is 100 gold, according to the BG3 Wiki’s Withers reference.
What respec changes—and what it doesn’t
Respec lets you revise class-based choices, including class, subclass, ability scores, skill proficiencies, spells and feats. It is useful when you want to rebuild a character’s progression rather than simply add a different class as you level.
Withers does not change a character’s race, gender, origin, appearance or background. Choices tied to race also stay fixed—for example, a High Elf’s selected cantrip.
Oathbreaker Paladins must restore their oath first
If the character is an Oathbreaker Paladin, speak with the Oathbreaker Knight and restore the oath before attempting to respec. Withers cannot perform the class change while the character remains an Oathbreaker.

Patch 8 and the respec interface
Larian’s Patch 8 announcement, published on April 15, 2025, described the update as the game’s final major patch and introduced 12 new subclasses. Its notes also say a respec bug was fixed: previously, players could need to deselect a current passive before selecting another. If older advice describes that workaround, it may refer to the pre-fix interface. Larian’s official site later displayed a Hotfix #36 notice dated March 26, 2026, so “final major patch” should not be taken to mean that no later hotfixes followed.
