Open Apple Games, select your avatar, choose Edit Profile, select your current nickname, enter a replacement (or choose Apple’s suggestion), and save it. You can also use Settings → Game Center → Customize Profile on iPhone and iPad, or System Settings → Game Center → Customize Profile on Mac.
Before you start
- Sign in to the device with your Apple Account and make sure Game Center is enabled.
- Apple’s current documentation presents the Apple Games app as the main profile-management surface on newer iPhone, iPad, and Mac software. Apple recommends updating your operating system before using it. See Apple’s Apple Games overview.
- This changes your Game Center nickname—the player name associated with your Game Center profile. It does not necessarily change your Apple Account name or email address, your device name, or a username maintained by an individual game.
Change your nickname on iPhone
Using Apple Games
- Open Apple Games.
- Tap your avatar in the top-right corner.
- Tap Edit Profile.
- Tap your current nickname.
- Type the new nickname, or select one of Apple’s suggestions.
- Tap Done. If the edit screen remains open, tap Done again.

Change your nickname on iPad
Using Apple Games
- Open Apple Games.
- Tap your avatar in the corner of the screen.
- Tap Edit Profile.
- Tap the current nickname.
- Enter a new name or choose one of Apple’s suggestions.
- Tap Done, then tap Done again if the profile editor stays open.
The iPad layout can vary with model, orientation, and software version. Apple documents the workflow in its iPad Game Center profile guide.
Using Settings
- Open Settings and tap Game Center.
- Tap Customize Profile.
- Tap the current nickname, enter the replacement or choose a suggestion, and tap Done.
Change your nickname on Mac
Using Apple Games
- Open Apple Games.
- Click your avatar in the top-right corner.
- Click Edit Profile.
- Select the current nickname.
- Enter a new nickname or select a suggested name.
- Close the profile window when finished.

Using System Settings
- Click the Apple menu , then choose System Settings.
- Click Game Center in the sidebar; scroll if necessary.
- Click Customize Profile.
- Select the current nickname, enter a replacement or choose a suggestion, then close the profile window.

What the change affects
The nickname is the player name friends see when playing together. Apple says your nickname, avatar, and scores can be visible to Game Center users. Your achievements and scores stay tied to the same Game Center profile; changing the displayed nickname does not create a new profile.

A particular game may show something different. Games can maintain their own local profile, publisher account, or username, and a leaderboard or player list may take time to refresh. If the new name appears in your Game Center profile but one game still shows the old name, open that game’s account or profile settings.
If you cannot edit the nickname
Apple Games is missing
The Apple Games app is associated with newer operating-system versions, so its availability depends on your device and software. Open Settings (or System Settings on Mac), search for Game Center, and use Customize Profile instead. On an iPhone or iPad, turn Game Center on and sign in if prompted.

Customize Profile is missing
- Confirm that you are signed in to an Apple Account.
- Check that Game Center is enabled and that the device has an internet connection.
- Try the Apple Games route after restarting the app or device.
- Install available iOS, iPadOS, or macOS updates.
- Check Screen Time restrictions, especially on a child or managed account.
Screen Time blocks the change
On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → App Store, Media, Web & Games → Game Center and allow Avatar & Nickname Changes. On Mac, open System Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → App Store, Media, Web & Games → Game Center, then allow the same control. A parent or family organizer may need to change it remotely through Family Sharing. Apple lists this restriction in its iPhone guide, iPad guide, and Mac restrictions guide.
Hide activity separately from changing your name
Changing the nickname is not the same as making your Game Center activity private. Apple provides Activity Sharing controls for profile activity, achievement progress, leaderboard updates, and recently played games. On iPhone and iPad, open Settings → Game Center → Activity Sharing; on Mac, choose Apple menu → System Settings → Game Center → Activity Sharing. Depending on age and region, the choices are Everyone, Friends Only, and Only You. Limits Apple does not specify in these guides
Apple’s cited instructions confirm that you can type a nickname or use a suggested one, but they do not state a universal character limit, prohibited-word list, symbol policy, uniqueness rule, or change frequency. If a name is rejected, try a shorter or different name, or select one of Apple’s suggestions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my Game Center nickname the same as my Apple Account name?
No. The nickname is a separate Game Center profile field. Changing it does not require changing your Apple Account name or email address.

Can I change my nickname from iCloud.com?
Apple’s current profile instructions document Apple Games and the Game Center controls in Settings or System Settings, not an iCloud.com nickname editor.
Why does a game still show my old name?
That game may use its own username or account profile, or its leaderboard may not have refreshed. Check the game’s profile or account settings after confirming the new name in Game Center.
