How to Change Your Game Resolution on Windows

Change game resolution safely, choose native or lower settings, and troubleshoot borderless mode, scaling, missing options and black screens.

Open your game’s Settings or Options, then look under Graphics, Display or Video for Resolution or Render Resolution. Choose a supported value, apply it and keep the change if the picture looks right. If the game has no useful resolution control—often because it only runs borderless—change the Windows display resolution before launching it.

What changing game resolution actually does

Display or output resolution is the image size sent to your monitor, such as 2560×1440. Render resolution is the size at which the game draws its image before display. Some games render below the output resolution and enlarge the result using a render-scale setting or upscaler. So a game can report a 4K output while internally rendering at a lower resolution.

Windows also has a desktop resolution. A game in borderless windowed mode often follows that desktop setting, while an exclusive fullscreen game may control the display mode itself. These settings are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Lower render resolution can reduce GPU workload and improve frame rate when the GPU is the bottleneck, but the image may look softer. Raising resolution can improve detail while demanding more from the GPU. A CPU-limited game, a frame cap or a separate render-scale setting can prevent a resolution change from improving performance.

  • 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.

Change resolution in the game

  1. Launch the game and open Settings or Options.
  2. Look under Graphics, Display or Video for Resolution, Display Resolution or Render Resolution. Exact labels and available choices vary by game.
  3. Select the desired resolution and choose a display mode: Fullscreen, Borderless Windowed or Windowed.
  4. Select Apply, Confirm or Keep Changes. If a confirmation timer appears, accept the new setting only if the picture is usable; otherwise let it revert.
  5. Restart the game if it asks you to.

Start with the monitor’s native resolution—the display’s intended pixel dimensions—for the sharpest image. Lower it if performance is insufficient, you want to conserve battery on a laptop or handheld, or an older game works poorly at the display’s native aspect ratio. Check for a separate Render Scale or Resolution Scale control as well: lowering that setting can improve performance even when the displayed resolution stays the same.

Choose a resolution that fits your display

These are common examples, not requirements. Use a mode supported by both your display and the game, and prefer one with the same aspect ratio as your screen.

Display type Typical native resolution Lower-resolution examples
1080p 1920×1080 1600×900, 1280×720
1440p 2560×1440 1920×1080, 1600×900
4K 3840×2160 2560×1440, 1920×1080

For a 16:9 screen, 1920×1080 and 1280×720 are examples of matching 16:9 resolutions. Steam’s display troubleshooting guidance also recommends trying a 16:9 resolution for compatibility or black-bar issues: Steam display troubleshooting.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

If you need more frames, try lowering demanding graphics options—such as ray tracing, shadows, volumetric effects or reflections—before sacrificing resolution. If the GPU remains the limit, reduce render resolution or use a supported upscaler. On a 4K display, 1440p may be a less drastic performance step than 1080p. Lowering resolution may do little when the processor is the bottleneck.

Fullscreen, borderless and windowed modes

Mode What to expect When it can help
Fullscreen The game has more direct control of the display and may offer more resolution choices. Changing modes can briefly blank the screen. When the game needs to change display modes or use a fullscreen-only driver feature.
Borderless windowed The game fills the screen as a window and generally uses the Windows desktop resolution. Alt-tabbing is usually straightforward; an in-game resolution change may not alter the output. When convenient switching between the game and desktop matters.
Windowed The game appears in a window, sometimes resizable. It can expose settings unavailable in fullscreen. When a resolution is missing or fullscreen is unusable.

Microsoft notes that some games only support borderless windowed fullscreen; in that case, changing Windows’ display resolution may be necessary. See Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution guidance. Steam likewise recommends trying windowed mode if the desired resolution is absent.

If the resolution you want is missing

Try these checks in order:

  1. Switch the game to Windowed mode and check the resolution list again.
  2. Check that Windows is using the intended display resolution: Start > Settings > System > Display > Display resolution. Choose a supported value, confirm it and relaunch the game. Microsoft documents this Display path in its resolution guidance.
  3. If the game is borderless-only, use the Windows desktop resolution the game should inherit, then launch it again.
  4. Confirm the monitor is connected to the intended graphics card, especially on a desktop with both motherboard and GPU display ports.
  5. Check that the game and graphics driver are up to date. Available display modes can depend on the game, monitor connection and hardware.

Windows 11 per-game graphics options

On supported Windows 11 systems, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, find the game or add its executable, then open the game’s options and review what is available. Microsoft’s Maximum display resolution option can change display resolution when a supported game launches and restore the previous resolution when it exits. This is part of Automatic Super Resolution, not a general feature available on every Windows PC; requirements include supported hardware, Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, supported drivers and compatible games. Microsoft’s feature details also state that Auto SR does not support HDR content.

Use scaling or upscaling when appropriate

Scaling determines how a lower-resolution image fits the monitor. Preserve aspect ratio keeps proportions intact and may leave black bars. Full panel stretches the image to fill the screen, which can make objects look too wide or tall. Center leaves the image at its original size, with borders around it. AMD describes these GPU scaling choices and notes that available controls vary by system in its GPU Scaling guidance. NVIDIA also documents scaling and black-border behavior in its Control Panel help.

NVIDIA Image Scaling

NVIDIA Image Scaling can upscale a lower game resolution toward the monitor’s native output. NVIDIA’s documented setup is to open NVIDIA Control Panel, enable Image Scaling, optionally choose a sharpening percentage, then launch the game in fullscreen and select a lower resolution in its settings. NVIDIA says the feature works natively with fullscreen applications; borderless or fake-fullscreen games may need another approach, such as changing the Windows desktop resolution. Its Image Scaling guide gives examples including 1920×1080 input for 4K output and 1280×720 input for 1440p output; these are examples, not universal recommendations.

AMD GPU Scaling and Radeon Super Resolution

To change AMD GPU scaling, open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, search for Display, open Display Settings, enable GPU Scaling and select a scaling mode. Choose preserve-aspect-ratio to avoid distortion, full-panel to stretch to the screen, or center to avoid enlarging the image. AMD’s instructions warn that controls can differ by configuration and software installation.

Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) is a driver-level upscaler for games without integrated upscaling support. AMD says it activates when a compatible game renders below the monitor’s native resolution and supports exclusive fullscreen or borderless fullscreen. Requirements include Windows 10 or 11, a discrete Radeon RX 5000-series GPU or newer, and a full installation of supported AMD Software. When a game offers built-in FidelityFX Super Resolution, AMD recommends using that option instead because game-specific integration may be better optimized. See AMD’s RSR requirements and guidance.

For pixel art or other low-resolution images where crisp, block-shaped pixels are intentional, integer scaling enlarges pixels by whole-number multiples rather than smoothing them. AMD explains the approach in its integer scaling guidance.

Fix black bars, blur, stretching or a black screen

Black bars

Bars can be the expected result of preserving the game’s aspect ratio when it differs from the display’s. They avoid distorting the image. If filling the entire screen matters more, full-panel scaling can stretch it; use that only if the altered proportions are acceptable.

Blurry image

  • Check whether the game is rendering below native resolution through Render Scale, Resolution Scale or an upscaler.
  • Try a less aggressive upscaling mode or native rendering if image clarity matters more than performance.
  • Check that the game resolution matches the display’s aspect ratio and that scaling is not stretching the image.
  • Review sharpening and motion-blur settings if the image still looks soft.

Stretched image

Check the aspect ratio selected in the game, GPU scaling mode and monitor picture settings. Select preserve-aspect-ratio scaling rather than full panel when keeping the image’s proportions is more important than filling every pixel.

Screen goes black after applying a resolution

  1. Wait for the confirmation timer to restore the previous setting automatically.
  2. If the game stays unusable, relaunch in windowed mode if that option is available.
  3. Set Windows to a resolution supported by the monitor, then launch the game again.
  4. Use the game’s graphics reset option if it provides one.
  5. For a compatible Steam game that will not launch, try Steam’s recovery steps below.

There is no single keyboard shortcut guaranteed to recover every game; controls depend on the title, display mode and system.

Steam recovery if a game will not launch

For a Steam game broken by a display setting, first restore a resolution that previously worked if you can. Steam also recommends updating Windows and graphics drivers. For compatible titles, it suggests the launch option -autoconfig, which asks the game to choose appropriate settings; it is not a universal resolution override or a command for every launcher. Follow Steam’s launch-option troubleshooting instructions.
