To change the name players see in League of Legends, update your Riot ID—the Game Name and tagline shown across Riot games. The quickest way is to sign in to your Riot Account page, edit both fields, and select Save Changes. Make sure you have the right Riot account selected before saving.
How do I change my name in League of Legends?
Riot now calls the displayed name a Riot ID. It contains a Game Name and a tagline, such as EarlGreyTeemo#sip: “EarlGreyTeemo” is the Game Name and “sip” is the tagline. Changing the Riot ID changes how you appear across Riot games, not just League of Legends. Riot Games Support explains the Riot ID format and its use across games.
Change it from a browser
- Open the Riot Account page and sign in to the account you want to update.
- Edit the Riot ID fields: your Game Name and tagline.
- Select Save Changes.
Start from the League of Legends PC client
- Open the Shop.
- Select the Account button.
- Select the Riot ID Change offer.
- Follow the popup to account.riotgames.com, enter the new Riot ID, and save it there.
The client option is a shortcut to the account page; the browser route works regardless of which Riot game you play. Riot says Riot ID changes and account management must be handled from a browser, not in Riot Mobile. See Riot’s Riot Mobile features guidance.
Is changing my LoL name free, and how often can I do it?
Riot says another free Riot ID change becomes available 90 days after your last free change. There is no paid Riot ID change option. Riot’s current change policy also describes the historical transition plan that began November 20, 2023; that date is not a future deadline.

If you changed your ID within the last 90 days but are experiencing harassment or other negative effects because of it, Riot directs you to submit a Player Support ticket. Do not pay a third party claiming it can bypass the restriction.
What name and tagline can I choose?
- Game Name: 3–16 alphanumeric characters. It must not be offensive or inappropriate.
- Tagline: 3–5 alphanumeric characters. It must not be offensive or inappropriate.
- Uniqueness: Your Game Name does not have to be unique on its own; the complete Riot ID must be available.
Taglines start with a region code by default. Riot says that after changing the tagline, you cannot return to one of its listed region-code taglines. If the tagline you choose produces an “already in use” error, try a different one. Riot’s naming rules and region-tag details.

Why can’t I use my old region tag?
Riot’s rule is that once you change your tagline, you cannot switch back to one of its listed region-code taglines. If a replacement tagline is rejected as already in use, choose another available tagline that meets the 3–5 character rule. Riot’s support guidance does not establish a way to restore a region-code tagline after changing it.
