Quick steps
- Open Steam or sign in through the Steam website.
- Select your account name and choose View my profile.
- Click Edit Profile.
- Open Profile Background in the profile-editing menu.
- Choose one of your available backgrounds.
- Select Save or Save Changes.
Steam’s layout and exact button placement can change between the desktop client, browser version, and future updates. If a label has moved, look for the Profile Background section inside Edit Profile.
What a Steam profile background changes
A profile background is a cosmetic applied to the background area of your Steam Community profile. It is separate from your avatar, avatar frame, artwork showcases, Steam client wallpaper, and Big Picture background.
It is also different from a mini-profile background. A normal profile background appears on your main profile page, while a mini-profile background appears in the small hover card shown when someone hovers over your avatar in places such as the friends list or Community pages.

How to get more Steam profile backgrounds
Steam Points Shop
The simplest route is the Steam Points Shop:
- Open the Points Shop from Steam’s Store menu, or visit it in a browser.
- Open the profile-related categories and choose Backgrounds.
- Pick a still, animated, or tiled profile background.
- Redeem it with Steam Points if your account is eligible.
- Use Equip if Steam offers that option, or equip it later through Edit Profile → Profile Background.
The background category separates still profile backgrounds, animated profile backgrounds, tiled backgrounds, and animated mini-profile backgrounds. Prices, availability, and eligibility vary by listing, so check the individual item rather than assuming every background costs the same amount.
Inventory and Community Market
A background received through trading, card-related activity, a market purchase, or another Steam transaction may appear in your Steam Inventory. Once the item is attached to your account, return to Edit Profile → Profile Background and select it.
Some tradable backgrounds may also be available through the Steam Community Market. Not every background is tradable or market-listed, and account restrictions, fees, availability, and item rules vary.
Still, animated, tiled, and mini-profile backgrounds

The procedure is the same as for a still background: go to View my profile → Edit Profile → Profile Background, then select an owned animated profile background and save.

Make sure the item is an Animated Profile Background, not an Animated Mini-Profile Background. The latter animates in the avatar-hover card and will not replace the background on your full profile. Animation may also fall back to a still presentation if the client, browser, connection, device, or accessibility settings do not load it normally.
How to remove or reset a background
- Open View my profile → Edit Profile.
- Select Profile Background.
- Choose a default, blank, or unequipped option if Steam shows one.
- Save the profile and reload it.
Steam does not always present the same reset label in every client or profile state. If there is no blank option, select another owned background, save it, reload the profile, and check the section again.
Why your Steam background is not showing
The background is missing from the selection list
- Confirm that the item was actually redeemed or added to your account, rather than only previewed in the Points Shop.
- Check your Steam Inventory.
- Restart Steam or refresh the browser, then reopen Edit Profile.
- Check both Profile Background and Mini-Profile Background.
- If the item came from a Game Profile, equip the Game Profile first and then customize its individual components where Steam allows it.
- Check the item listing for game ownership, account eligibility, or availability restrictions.
Other people cannot see the change
First confirm that you saved the profile and are viewing the correct account. Then check your profile privacy settings. Steam Support explains that privacy settings control who can view profile information; use the Steam profile customization and privacy page if the profile is not visible as expected.

The background is cropped or partly hidden
This is usually normal. Steam places profile content, headers, and showcases over the background, and the middle area can be covered or darkened. Valve’s design guidance warns creators that profile content occludes the center of a background, so important artwork near that area may not remain visible.

When choosing a background, look for dark artwork with clear edges and keep in mind that bright, busy imagery can reduce the contrast of profile text and showcases.
The animation does not play
Check that you equipped an animated Profile Background, rather than an animated mini-profile item. Then refresh the profile or restart Steam. If it still appears static, the client, browser, device, reduced-motion setting, or network may be using a fallback presentation. Animated backgrounds are not guaranteed to render identically for every viewer.

Profile Background versus Game Profile
A Game Profile is a broader themed bundle rather than a single background. Steam’s official documentation describes Game Profiles as packages that can include an animated avatar, avatar frame, animated mini-profile background, animated profile background, and profile color or theme settings.
Use an ordinary profile background when you only want to replace the main image. Choose a Game Profile when you want a coordinated visual style across several profile elements. Applying one may change multiple components at once, although you can generally return to Edit Profile and replace individual elements where the current interface permits it.
Changing only the background does not necessarily preserve every color or layout effect associated with a Game Profile. See Steam’s profile bundle listings for current availability.

Can you upload your own Steam profile background?
Steam’s standard profile-background control is for selecting eligible Steam cosmetic items already attached to your account. It is not a normal upload tool for turning any personal image into a native profile background.

If you want to display your own image, use a Steam Artwork Showcase or another profile showcase. Uploading artwork does not automatically make it the account’s native background. Browser developer-tool previews and unofficial scripts may alter only your local page view; they do not permanently change what other users see after the page is refreshed.
Choosing the right background
- Choose still for a calmer, more readable profile and less motion.
- Choose animated for a more dynamic profile, accepting that playback can vary.
- Choose tiled for a repeating texture rather than a full scene.
- Check contrast: dark artwork generally works better behind profile text and showcases.
- Check the focal point: the center may be covered by profile content.
- Use a Game Profile if you want matching colors, avatars, frames, and backgrounds.
- Use an Artwork Showcase if the priority is displaying your own uploaded image.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change my Steam background for free?
You can equip any eligible background already attached to your account without paying again. New items may require Steam Points, a market purchase, trading, or another acquisition method.
Can I use any image as a Steam profile background?
No. The normal profile-background menu selects eligible Steam cosmetic items. Use an Artwork Showcase for a custom uploaded image.
Why can’t I find my background?
Check your Inventory, refresh or restart Steam, and verify that you are looking under Profile Background rather than Mini-Profile Background. Also check the item’s eligibility and availability.

What is an animated mini-profile background?
It changes the small profile card shown when someone hovers over your avatar. It does not replace the animated or still background on your main profile.
Does changing a Game Profile change my avatar too?
A Game Profile can bundle an avatar, frame, backgrounds, and color settings. You may be able to replace individual components afterward through Edit Profile.
Can other people see my background if my profile is private?
Visibility depends on your current Steam privacy settings. If others cannot see the profile, review those settings and test the profile while signed out or in another browser.
Why is the background cropped?
Steam overlays profile content and showcases on the image, especially around the center. Cropping or obstruction is therefore often part of the normal layout.
