You can review rights before going live, but YouTube does not describe a pre-broadcast tool that certifies a planned livestream as copyright-free or guarantees monetization. YouTube scans streams while they are live, and an archived stream may receive Content ID claims after it ends. Check what you plan to use, watch for live warnings, then inspect the archive in YouTube Studio; none of these steps guarantees approval for ads.
What you can—and cannot—check before going live
Before a broadcast, you can audit its music, clips, images, and other third-party material and confirm that your rights cover the planned livestream, use, and relevant territories. That is a practical rights review, not a YouTube clearance certificate. YouTube’s published process describes live scanning and post-stream claims, not a creator-facing preflight check that certifies a planned broadcast. A clean advance review therefore cannot promise that the stream will avoid a match, claim, or monetization restriction. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance
Before the stream: audit every element
- Make an inventory. List every third-party element that viewers may hear or see, including background music, game or broadcast clips, images, and other audiovisual material.
- Verify the rights for this use. Confirm that you own the necessary rights or have permission covering a livestream, your intended use, and the territories where you plan to stream. Do not assume a general license covers every use or region.
- Request a Content ID allowlist entry when needed. If licensed content is managed through Content ID, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its allowlist. YouTube says a stream can still be interrupted without this step—even if you have a license or restrict the stream to territories where you hold rights. A license and an allowlist entry are separate checks. YouTube’s guidance on licensed content and allowlisting
During the stream: respond to YouTube’s scan
YouTube says it scans all live streams for third-party matches. If it identifies third-party content, a placeholder image may replace the stream and YouTube may warn you to stop using that material. If the material continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Watch the live output and any YouTube warnings, and promptly remove or address identified material. A warning-free moment is not advance or ongoing clearance. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance
After the stream: inspect the archive for claims
YouTube says copyright claims on an archived live stream are made after the stream ends, if you choose to archive it. To check the archived video in Studio:

- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select Content.
- Filter by Claims and find the livestream.
- Review the Restrictions column and select See details to inspect the claim, including the claimant and matched content where shown.
A claim on an archive is distinct from the live scan that may interrupt a broadcast. You can learn about the claim and its effects in YouTube’s guide to copyright claims.
Know the difference between a claim, a takedown, and a strike
- Content ID claim: A rights holder’s Content ID match can lead to a video being blocked, tracked, or monetized by the claimant; the outcome can vary by geography. Claims usually do not affect the channel or account by themselves.
- Copyright removal request: This is a legal request to remove content, not the same thing as a Content ID claim.
- Copyright strike: A strike has separate account consequences. A strike on a livestream may disable live access, and strikes may also affect channel monetization. For live-stream restrictions and account standing, see YouTube’s live-stream restrictions guidance and its account-standing guidance.
A copyright check is not monetization approval
Copyright is only one part of YouTube monetization review. YouTube’s channel monetization policies cover live streams, and content that fails copyright or advertiser-friendly requirements may earn limited or no ad revenue. As YouTube puts it, “Keep in mind that when we use the term video on this page, it refers to Shorts, long-form videos, and live streaming.” So a stream with no current claim shown is not necessarily approved for monetization or guaranteed to earn ad revenue. If you dispute a claim
YouTube states that if you dispute a claim within five days, revenue is held beginning on the first day the claim was placed. If you dispute after five days, the hold begins on the date you dispute. This is a rule about when revenue is held, not a typical dispute-resolution timeline. See YouTube’s guidance on monetization during copyright claim disputes.
