Check Microsoft’s official Xbox status page first. It is the authoritative source for active Xbox service incidents. Then compare the result with another Xbox device or app, and—if necessary—use Downdetector and the console’s built-in network test to determine whether the problem affects Xbox broadly, your account, your internet connection, or only one game.
Xbox services do not always fail all at once. Sign-in, multiplayer, purchases, game launching, and mobile or Windows apps can be affected independently, so a green-looking overall service does not necessarily rule out a narrower problem.
1. Check the official Xbox status page
Open support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-live-status on your phone or computer. Using a different connection from the one used by your Xbox—such as mobile data instead of home Wi-Fi—can help if your entire home network is offline.
Look for an incident, warning, limited outage, major outage, or maintenance notice. Pay attention to:

- Which service is affected
- Whether the issue is limited or widespread
- The latest update time
- Microsoft’s description of the problem
The page is a JavaScript application. If the status details do not appear, enable JavaScript, try another browser, or open the page on another device.
What the Xbox status categories mean
Read the page by function rather than treating Xbox as simply “up” or “down.” Recent Xbox status reporting has grouped problems into categories such as:

An outage in one category can leave other features working. For example, you may be able to browse the Store while sign-in or multiplayer is unavailable.
2. Check another Xbox surface
Test the same service somewhere else before changing your router or console settings. Depending on what is available, try:

- A different game or Xbox service
If the same account or feature fails on several devices, a Microsoft service incident or account problem becomes more likely. If only one console fails while the website and apps work, a local network or console configuration problem is more likely.
This comparison is useful but not conclusive. Xbox components can have separate incidents, and a problem affecting one region, game, or account may not appear everywhere.

3. Use Downdetector as a second signal
Check an independent report source such as Downdetector’s Xbox Network page. Downdetector displays user reports and highlights unusual increases compared with normal reporting volume. Its Xbox page can separate reports involving server connections, game launches, gameplay, login, purchases, and downloads or updates.
Do not treat Downdetector as official confirmation. User reports can be noisy, regional, or influenced by a popular game having its own server problem. A practical interpretation is:
- Official Xbox incident plus a simultaneous Downdetector spike: strong evidence of a broad or significant outage.
- Official page is clear but Downdetector spikes: the incident may be new, regional, partial, or not yet reflected on Microsoft’s page. Recheck both sources.
- Official page is clear and reports are normal: a local network, ISP, account, console, or individual-game problem is more likely.
4. Run the Xbox network test
On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, open the guide and follow this path:
Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection
A successful test indicates that the console can reach the Xbox service. It does not prove that every Xbox feature or every game server is working, but it makes a complete local internet failure less likely.
A failed test points toward the console’s network path, including Wi-Fi, Ethernet, the router, DNS, the ISP, or another connectivity problem. From the same Network settings area, you can also test multiplayer connectivity and inspect the NAT status.

What NAT tells you
NAT problems can interfere with multiplayer matchmaking, joining other players, or party chat even when the console has general internet access. If single-player games and the Store work but multiplayer does not, check multiplayer connectivity and NAT before assuming that Xbox is down.
A NAT-related failure usually suggests a router or network-configuration issue, not a complete Xbox Network outage. However, the test result should be considered alongside the official status page and the behavior of other devices.
5. Separate an Xbox outage from a home-network outage
Use another device connected to the same home network. Try loading unrelated websites or using another online service.
- Nothing on the network works: suspect the modem, router, Wi-Fi, internet connection, or ISP.
- Other devices work but Xbox does not: investigate the console’s connection, NAT, account, or Xbox-specific service.
- Only Wi-Fi fails: suspect wireless signal quality, interference, router settings, or the console’s Wi-Fi path.
- Ethernet works but Wi-Fi fails: the Xbox service is probably reachable, and the wireless path is the more likely cause.
Microsoft’s general connection guidance recommends checking another device, restarting the modem and router, trying another connection path, and checking with the ISP when the local network appears connected but internet access is unavailable. If you normally use Wi-Fi, temporarily connect the Xbox to the router with Ethernet. This is a diagnostic step, not a fix for a Microsoft-side outage. If you need one for testing, an optional Cat 6 Ethernet cable can provide a wired connection for Xbox troubleshooting. If wired access works, focus on wireless interference, distance, signal strength, or router configuration rather than changing Xbox account settings.
If both Wi-Fi and Ethernet fail while other devices also cannot get online, investigate the home internet connection. If both work but a particular Xbox feature fails, return to the official status page and the relevant account or game checks.
6. Check for account-specific problems
If the status page is clear but sign-in, profile access, or purchases fail, the issue may be specific to your Microsoft or Xbox account.

For purchase problems, check:
- Whether a subscription or payment is overdue
- Whether the payment method is valid
- Whether the account has been suspended or restricted
- Whether the Microsoft Store or Xbox console needs an update

Xbox Network availability and an individual game’s servers are separate questions. If other Xbox services work and only one game refuses to connect, check that game’s publisher status page and support account.
This is especially important for games with their own authentication, matchmaking, or server infrastructure. An Xbox status page can be clear while a publisher’s game servers are experiencing maintenance or an incident.
8. Do not change router ports just because Xbox is down
Port forwarding is not a sensible first response to an Xbox status incident. It cannot repair a Microsoft backend outage and can create unnecessary security or connectivity complications.
For persistent Xbox One connectivity problems, Microsoft documents these commonly used ports: UDP 88; UDP/TCP 3074; UDP/TCP 53; TCP 80; UDP 500; UDP 3544; and UDP 4500. Use port-related troubleshooting only after the official status check and basic network isolation indicate a continuing local multiplayer or connectivity problem.
Quick Xbox outage decision tree
- The official status page reports an affected service: treat the problem as service-side first. Note the affected category and update time, then monitor Microsoft’s updates.
- The official page is clear but Downdetector shows a spike: consider a new, regional, or partial outage. Test another Xbox surface and recheck both sources.
- The official page is clear and only one console fails the network test: troubleshoot Wi-Fi, Ethernet, router, DNS, NAT, and ISP connectivity.
- The console reaches Xbox but multiplayer fails: test multiplayer connectivity and NAT. The issue may involve matchmaking or the router rather than Xbox as a whole.
- Only purchases or account features fail: check account restrictions, payment details, subscription status, and Store or console updates.
- Only one game fails: check that game’s publisher and server status.
What to do during a confirmed Xbox outage
There is usually no local setting that can repair a confirmed Microsoft service incident. Save the wording of the incident and its latest update time, then:

- Recheck the official status page periodically.
- Avoid repeatedly changing router ports, DNS, account details, or subscription settings.
- Try an offline-capable game or feature if your console allows it.
- Use Xbox Support’s official channels if the incident page directs users to contact support.
Microsoft may update the incident as engineers investigate and later announce recovery. Do not rely on an estimated restoration time unless Microsoft publishes one. A status page can also lag behind a newly developing or narrow incident, so continued symptoms after a green status justify the device, account, and game checks above.

Before contacting anyone, record the exact error message, the affected feature, whether other devices work, the network-test result, and the time the problem began. That information helps distinguish an outage from a local fault.
