Identify the console model, copy its complete serial number, and use a current patched/unpatched checker as an initial screen. Early original Nintendo Switch consoles (model HAC-001) may accept the RCM method without a modchip; revised HAC-001(-01), Switch Lite, and Switch OLED hardware generally require a soldered modchip. A serial result marked as borderline is not proof, so confirm it with an RCM test by a competent technician or keep a return option when buying used.
1. Identify your Switch model first
The model number determines which modification path is even possible. Read the model text on the back of the console and compare it with Nintendo’s model designations:
| Model family | Model number | What the hardware usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo Switch | HAC-001 | Early units may be vulnerable to the RCM boot-ROM path and can sometimes run custom firmware without a modchip. |
| Revised Nintendo Switch | HAC-001(-01) | Later hardware patched the original vulnerability; a soldered modchip is generally required. |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | HDH-001 | Uses patched hardware and generally requires a soldered modchip. |
| Nintendo Switch OLED Model | HEG-001 | Uses patched hardware and generally requires a soldered modchip. |
Do not treat every console sold as an “original Switch” as vulnerable. The HAC-001 label identifies the family, but production date and serial range determine whether a particular unit is patched.
2. Find the complete serial number
- Open System Settings on the console.
- Scroll to System.
- Select Serial Information and copy the entire console serial number.
The serial is also printed on the console label. On an OLED model, open the adjustable stand fully and read the white label underneath it. Enter every character into the checker; a prefix alone cannot identify an individual unit reliably.
#1 Best Overall
- MATERIAL: You will receive 1 piece of RCM jig clip, made of premium plastic, Suitable for long-term use
- SUITABLE: Suitable for Nintendo Switch RCM / NS SX O
- EASY TO USE: Easy to use, slide it into the rail and stop inserting when you feel resistance from the rail.
- PRACTICAL: product can be used for NS switch, quickly enter recovery mode. Convenient and practical.
- PRODUCT SIZE: This RCM tool switch is about 2cm/0.79 inch in length, the width about 1cm/0.39 inch and the height measured about 0.6cm/0.24 inch. Please confirm the size before placing an order.
Americas prefixes
Nintendo lists these prefixes for consoles sold in the Americas: XAW and XKW for Nintendo Switch, XJW for Switch Lite, and XTW for Switch OLED. Prefixes are useful for identifying the family, but the rest of the serial is what a checker uses to assess the production range.
3. Use a patched/unpatched serial checker carefully
Enter the full serial into a current community-maintained patched/unpatched checker. These services are screening tools outside Nintendo’s official support system, not an official guarantee.
- Clearly unpatched: The range is considered likely to retain the original RCM vulnerability, subject to confirmation.
- Clearly patched: Plan on a modchip installation if custom firmware is your goal.
- Might be patched, unknown, or borderline: Treat the result as inconclusive rather than as permission to buy or modify the console.
Serial ranges near manufacturing boundaries can produce incorrect or uncertain results. Save a screenshot of the result with the full serial, but do not describe a borderline unit as guaranteed unpatched.

4. Confirm an uncertain result with an RCM test
An actual RCM test is the practical confirmation for a potentially vulnerable HAC-001. It checks whether the console can enter recovery mode and accept a payload over USB. Have a competent technician perform the test, particularly when evaluating a used console or a unit whose serial falls in a “might be patched” range.

What “unpatched” means
Early Switch boot ROM code exposed a hardware RCM path. On an unpatched original HAC-001, that path can often be entered without soldering, allowing a payload to be sent over USB. Later production hardware corrected the vulnerability. “Unpatched” therefore describes a hardware condition, not a software setting or a guarantee that every custom-firmware setup will work.

Do Switch Lite and OLED models need a modchip?
In normal circumstances, yes. Switch Lite (HDH-001), OLED (HEG-001), and revised Switch (HAC-001(-01)) systems use later, patched hardware, so the soft-mod RCM route used by vulnerable original HAC-001 units is generally unavailable. Custom firmware on those models normally requires a professionally installed soldered modchip.
Installation quality, warranty terms, legality, and service availability vary by country. Verify the technician’s current terms and experience for your exact model before paying for work.

A Nintendo Switch RCM jig is a small physical tool used during the RCM entry step on a vulnerable original HAC-001. It does not remove a hardware patch, and it does not make a revised Switch, Lite, or OLED soft-moddable. Buying a jig before confirming the model and serial can therefore leave you with an accessory that cannot solve your console’s limitation.
How to evaluate a used Switch listing
- Confirm the model number from a photograph of the back or system information.
- Request the complete serial, not only XAW, XKW, XJW, or XTW.
- Run the serial through a current checker and record whether the result is clear or borderline.
- For an uncertain result, require an RCM test by a competent technician or use a returnable purchase.
- Check whether the seller will provide testing evidence and honor the stated return policy.
- For patched hardware, budget for a separate modchip installation rather than an RCM jig.
Quick decision guide
| Your finding | Practical conclusion |
|---|---|
| HAC-001 with a clearly unpatched serial | Potentially moddable through the RCM path without a modchip; confirm before relying on it. |
| HAC-001 with a borderline serial | Not confirmed. Obtain an RCM test or retain a return option. |
| HAC-001(-01), HDH-001, or HEG-001 | Assume patched hardware and investigate qualified modchip installation if appropriate. |
| Seller will not provide the serial or test evidence | Moddability cannot be verified; treat the purchase as a normal, unconfirmed console. |
The Bottom Line
Model number identifies the likely hardware path, but the complete serial and—when necessary—an RCM test determine whether an individual Switch is a realistic candidate. Early HAC-001 units may be soft-moddable; revised, Lite, and OLED consoles generally need a soldered modchip.
