To confirm whether an NFL player is available for a specific game, check the matchup’s official inactive report on NFL.com’s Inactives hub, then compare it with the team’s latest official game-day update. The inactive list is exchanged at the pregame meeting scheduled 90 minutes before kickoff; an earlier injury designation such as “Questionable” is not final confirmation.
Check the report for the right game
- Identify the matchup and kickoff time. Inactive reports apply to a particular game, so make sure the date, opponents and team are correct.
- Open the NFL Inactives hub. Go to NFL.com/inactives and look for the relevant report. If the hub says reports are not available yet, search NFL.com for the matchup’s game-specific inactive report. NFL.com organizes reports by matchup and lists inactive players for both clubs; an example is its Week 1 inactives report.
- Check the player under the correct club. Confirm that the report is for the game you are following and that you are reading the correct team’s list.
- Cross-check a current team announcement. If the club has posted an official game-day update, compare it with the league report, especially if there has been a late development.
- Recheck near kickoff if the status is important. The league’s scheduled reporting point is 90 minutes before kickoff, but official updates closer to kickoff can matter if a late change is reported.
When do NFL teams announce inactives?
NFL Football Operations says clubs exchange their Game Day Administration Reports, including each team’s inactive list, at the 90-minute officiating meeting before kickoff. That makes roughly 90 minutes before the game the key scheduled time to look for the list. The reports may not appear on the central hub before the relevant game-day reporting window.
For the procedure, see NFL Football Operations’ Game and Stadium Prep.
What injury designations do—and do not—tell you
An injury report and the final game-day inactive list answer different questions. The injury report describes practice participation and a player’s status heading into the game; the inactive list identifies players designated inactive for that matchup. A player with an earlier injury designation still needs game-day confirmation.

| Injury designation | NFL policy meaning | What it confirms about game-day status |
|---|---|---|
| Questionable | Uncertain whether the player will play. | It does not confirm that the player is active or inactive. |
| Doubtful | Unlikely the player will participate. | It is not a substitute for checking the game-day inactive list. |
| Out | The player will not play. | It indicates the player will not play, but the inactive report is the game-day list to check for the matchup. |
These definitions come from the NFL’s injury-report policy explainer. The league says, “If there is any question concerning a player’s availability for the game, he should be listed as ‘Questionable.’”
How to interpret the inactive list
- Player listed as inactive: Treat the player as unavailable for ordinary participation in that game. A narrow emergency-third-quarterback exception applies under specific conditions.
- Player not listed as inactive: This addresses game-day availability status only. It does not establish the player’s role, snap count or expected performance.
- Questionable earlier in the week: Do not translate the label into a yes-or-no answer. Check the final game-day information.
The emergency quarterback provision is an exception for a designated third quarterback, not a general route for ordinary inactive players to enter a game. The NFL explains its conditions in its emergency third-quarterback rule Q&A.

Choosing which update to trust
Prefer an official league or team source that matches the exact matchup and is current. Check whether a post describes a practice or injury designation, or the actual game-day inactive list; those are not interchangeable. If two official updates appear to differ, verify their timestamps and whether both refer to the same game before drawing a conclusion.
