Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBefore changing settings, search ProtonDB for the exact game title and read recent reports that match your Steam Deck or Linux-and-Proton setup. Then compare what players describe with the game’s official Steam Deck compatibility details. ProtonDB is useful community evidence; Valve’s compatibility status is the official Deck assessment, and neither tells you exactly how the game will behave on every individual Deck.
Find the game’s ProtonDB page
-
Go to ProtonDB and search for the game’s exact title. Check that the result is the right game, especially if its name is shared with another release.
-
Open the game page and read the reports, not only its aggregate rating. Valve’s Proton wiki documents the per-game report URL pattern as
https://www.protondb.com/app/<appid>, where<appid>is the game’s Steam app ID. The wiki also describes ProtonDB as a place for community compatibility reports: Community Compatibility Reports.
ProtonDB gathers player-submitted experiences with games running through Proton on Linux, including reports that may contain Steam Deck-specific details. Its aggregate rating summarizes community reports; it is not a Valve certification or a guarantee for your device. ProtonDB

Read reports for details you can compare
Prioritize recent reports that explicitly mention the Steam Deck or describe a Linux and Proton setup close to yours. For each useful report, note:
-
Date: Older reports may refer to a different game build or software environment.
-
Setup: Record any Deck, SteamOS, or other system details the player provides. Reports do not necessarily use the same hardware, settings, or game version as your Deck.
-
Proton version and launch options: Note which compatibility tool and any launch options the player says they used.

Outcome and limitations: Separate whether the game launches from how its controls, readability, stability, or performance are described. Look for specific caveats as well as workarounds.
Look for more than one recent report describing similar conditions before treating a workaround as a useful lead. A report is an observation from one player’s setup, not proof that the same change will work on yours.
Cross-check Steam’s official Deck compatibility details
ProtonDB answers what players report; Valve’s compatibility review assesses the game against Steam Deck criteria. You can see compatibility details in the game’s Library or Store listing. Valve says, “When you visit your Library on Steam Deck, you’ll automatically see the compatibility rating of each game, indicating the kind of experience you can expect when playing.” Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility page
Valve’s review criteria include system support and, when a game runs through Proton, Proton and middleware support. Compatibility review is ongoing: game updates, changes to Deck features, and new Proton releases can lead to refreshed results. Valve’s compatibility review documentation

If Steam lists the game as Playable or Unsupported, Steam Support directs users to the game’s Store compatibility section to see which Verified requirements it does not meet. That gives you a more specific official clue than the status label alone. Steam Deck – Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide
Use a ProtonDB workaround as a controlled test
If recent reports point to a particular compatibility tool, Steam Support provides this per-game route for selecting one:
-
In your Library, highlight the game and open Menu > Properties > Compatibility.
-
Select Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then choose the tool you want to test.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
-
Launch the game and compare the result with its behavior before the change. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
This setting is a troubleshooting experiment, not a guaranteed fix. If it makes the game worse or does not address the reported symptom, undo the change before testing another suggestion. Steam Support
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When ProtonDB and Steam disagree
Do not treat the two sources as competing verdicts: they answer different questions. Valve’s current Deck status reflects its compatibility criteria; ProtonDB reports describe what individual players observed. A game can have favorable reports alongside a status that points to a specific unmet Deck requirement, or a community report can describe a problem that is not universal.
To make sense of a mismatch, compare the report date and software context, then match the symptom precisely. A report about launching does not establish that controls or performance are satisfactory. Give more weight to multiple recent reports that describe conditions and a workaround similar to yours, while using Steam’s compatibility details to identify unmet official requirements. Because both game updates and Proton releases can change outcomes, an older badge or report may not reflect current behavior.
