Before buying a Nintendo Switch 2 game—or a Switch 2 upgrade—check the exact title and edition on Nintendo’s compatibility and store listings, confirm any upgrade pack’s price and eligibility, and match the purchase to your account and console region. Switch 2 plays many Switch games, but Nintendo says some may be unsupported or not fully compatible.
Is this Switch game compatible with Switch 2?
Start with Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information and look for notes on the exact game. Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games can run on Switch 2, but support is not universal. Some titles may not work or may have compatibility limitations, so don’t treat the fact that a game was released for Switch as a guarantee.
Nintendo Support also notes that some Switch games offer free updates or paid upgrades for added content or improved performance on Switch 2. Those updates and upgrades are separate from basic compatibility; check the individual game’s listing to learn what it offers.
Which listing should I buy: the game, an edition, or an upgrade pack?
Identify the product before you pay. A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition bundles the original Switch game with its Switch 2 upgrade pack. Some games have no upgrade pack, and the available features differ by title.

- Nintendo Switch game: The original game. Check its Switch 2 compatibility and whether an upgrade pack exists.
- Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: The game bundled with its upgrade pack. Nintendo says the retail Switch 2 Edition and the same edition assembled by combining the game with its upgrade pack contain the same content.
- Upgrade pack: An add-on for a game you own, when Nintendo offers one. It is not a standalone copy of the original game.
Check that the listing matches your plan: buying the Switch 2 Edition is different from buying only an upgrade pack for a game you already own.
Do I have to buy the game again for Switch 2?
Not necessarily. If you own a physical or digital Switch version of a title with an available upgrade pack, Nintendo says you can buy that pack through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or a retailer selling Nintendo games. Confirm the pack is for the exact game and edition you own before purchasing.

Compare the current price of the pack with the price of the Switch 2 Edition. The better route depends on what you already own and the title’s actual listings; there is no universal upgrade price.
Is the Switch 2 upgrade free with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack?
Some upgrade packs are available at no additional cost to active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members, but this does not apply to every game or every upgrade. Check the specific pack’s Nintendo listing for its current price and membership terms.

For one title-specific example, Nintendo lists the The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack at $9.99 USD and says eligible active Expansion Pack members can obtain it at no additional cost. That is a price for this pack, not a standard price for Switch 2 upgrades.
Can I upgrade a physical Switch game?
Yes, if Nintendo offers an upgrade pack for that game and you own the compatible physical version. Nintendo says owners of physical and digital versions may buy an available pack. With a physical game, you still need the game itself to play; the upgrade pack does not replace it.

For a digital game, Nintendo treats purchased games and DLC as virtual game cards. Load the relevant virtual game card onto the console you plan to use. Nintendo says a loaded compatible virtual game card can be played offline and by other users on that console. Check the country or region on your Nintendo Account and eShop, as well as the region intended for the game, code, or pack. Nintendo says eShop cards are region-specific, and upgrade-pack compatibility depends on the software. Its guidance is to buy software and packs intended for your console’s region.

Do not assume a code or DLC from another region will work just because the base game has the same title. Check Nintendo’s region information and the title-specific listing before buying.
What to check before you complete the purchase
- Confirm the exact product. On the Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or retailer listing, distinguish the original Switch game, Switch 2 Edition, and upgrade pack.
- Check the game’s compatibility notes. Use Nintendo’s compatibility page and title-specific information rather than assuming every Switch game works without limits.
- Look for an upgrade pack only if you need one. Verify that Nintendo offers it for your game and edition, and compare the actual listing with the Switch 2 Edition bundle.
- Check price and membership eligibility. Confirm the current terms for that specific pack; only certain packs are included for Expansion Pack members.
- Match regions. Confirm the game, pack or code, console, and Nintendo Account region are compatible before paying.
- After purchase, check what must be installed or loaded. Nintendo’s software update guidance says an update may be required in addition to the upgrade pack. If you bought a separate digital pack, check that its virtual game card is loaded on the console you are using.
Nintendo’s compatibility notes, game listings, upgrade prices, and membership benefits can change. Recheck the current official listing for the exact title before purchase.
