To check whether an accessory will work, match its exact model to your console’s generation and model, then confirm the connection method, required adapter or firmware, and the features you need. A familiar connector—or a listing that names the console family—is not enough: headset audio, controller game support and charging can each have separate requirements.
Start with the exact console and accessory models
Before comparing products, write down the console’s generation and model number, plus the accessory’s full model number. Do not assume that compatibility carries over from an older console to a newer one, or between systems with similar-looking ports. Switch and Switch 2 accessories, for example, can differ by generation; consult Nintendo’s cross-generation compatibility tables rather than relying on a product title.
Next, find the accessory maker’s official compatibility list or support page. Check for restrictions or prerequisites such as a console-specific version, firmware update, licensing, wireless receiver or adapter, and supported games or features. If the maker does not identify your exact setup, ask the console or accessory manufacturer before buying; provide both model numbers and describe how you plan to connect it.
Check the connection method for a headset
Headsets can connect by a controller’s 3.5 mm jack, USB, a console-specific wireless system, or Bluetooth. These are not interchangeable: the presence of a USB port or Bluetooth capability does not prove that the console supports that headset’s audio, microphone or chat features.

- Enjoy expansive cinematic sound. Big 50 mm audio drivers deliver an incredible sound experience
- Hear Enemies From All Sides. DTS Headphone:X 2.0 surround sound(1) lets you hear enemies sneaking behind you, special ability cues, and immersive environments. It’s positional clarity that can make the difference between victory and defeat. Experience three-dimensional audio that goes beyond 7.1 channels to make you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. (1) DTS Headphone:X 2.0 requires Logitech G HUB Software.
- Be Heard Loud and Clear. The big 6 mm boom mic makes sure you’re heard by gaming partners and mutes when flipped up.
- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
Wired 3.5 mm headsets
A wired headset may plug into the 3.5 mm jack on a compatible controller. Confirm that the controller has the jack and that the headset maker supports the console and controller models you own. A successful physical connection does not guarantee that every microphone, chat or other feature will work.
Xbox describes wired Xbox headsets connecting through a 3.5 mm jack on a compatible Xbox controller. Verify the headset and controller models and the desired chat features in Xbox’s headset connection guidance.
USB and wireless headsets
For USB audio, check the headset’s exact console compatibility statement and instructions; do not infer audio support from the shape of a USB port. PlayStation’s PS5 USB-port guide explains which devices and ports are supported, but a supported port does not establish that every USB headset will work. The guide’s PULSE Elite example uses the included PlayStation Link USB adapter, paired to the headset out of the box; that is a product-specific setup, not a universal rule.

For wireless models, look for the named console protocol or included receiver the manufacturer requires. Xbox says wireless Xbox headsets pair with the console; check the particular headset’s instructions and supported features. Bluetooth capability alone does not establish PS5 support: PlayStation’s November 2020 PS5 FAQ said wireless third-party Bluetooth headsets are not supported and advised readers to consult headset manufacturers about compatibility. Because that is launch-era guidance, verify current support for the exact model before purchase.
The same 2020 FAQ says headsets connecting through a 3.5 mm jack, USB-A or USB-C will work for 3D Audio. Treat this as the FAQ’s connection guidance, not a guarantee that all features of every headset are supported; check current model-specific documentation.
Check the game generation for a controller
Confirm both that the controller works with the console and that it works with the games you want to play. Support can vary by game generation on the same system. PlayStation says licensed PS4 standard-form controllers work with PS4 games played on PS5, but not with PS5 games; see the PS5 FAQ for that distinction.

For a new DualSense controller, PlayStation’s pairing instructions describe connecting it to PS5 with the included USB cable. PlayStation also says a DualSense pairs with one PS5 console at a time and that up to four controllers can be used at once. For chargers, match the console or accessory’s power requirements, connector and cable, and the region where the adapter will be used. Separately verify where charging is supported: an accessory may charge from its AC adapter but not from a console dock’s USB port.

Nintendo’s dock troubleshooting guidance lists the Pro Controller, Joy-Con Charging Grip, Nintendo Switch LAN Adapter and GameCube Controller Adapter as compatible dock devices. It also notes that the Pro Controller or Charging Grip may charge directly from the AC adapter but fail to charge through the dock’s USB port. The HAC-010 USB charging cable is the cable included with the Pro Controller or Charging Grip; Nintendo says replacing a damaged cable with the original one will likely resolve the described issue.
Compare candidates before buying
If you are choosing between two accessories, compare the details that determine whether your own setup will work—not just the brand or headline compatibility label.
- Console: generation and exact model.
- Connection: jack, USB, wireless protocol or required receiver/adapter.
- Supported functions: audio, microphone and chat for headsets; target games or software for controllers; charging route for chargers.
- Requirements: firmware, licensing, power output, cable model and region.
- Uncertainty: whether the manufacturer confirms your exact models, and the return policy if it does not.
If a listing says only “compatible with PlayStation,” “works with Xbox” or “USB-C,” treat that as incomplete until its support page confirms your console generation, model and intended features.
