Start with its Steam Deck compatibility category and notes, confirm whether it runs natively or through Proton, then verify anti-cheat and online access separately. Finally, compare the game’s requirements with the device’s hardware and your target resolution and performance. A Steam Deck badge is useful evidence, but it does not certify another Linux handheld or mini PC.
1. Check the Steam Deck compatibility category and notes
Open the game’s Steam store page and look for its Steam Deck compatibility details. Read the notes as well as the category: Valve’s review considers controller support, display and legibility, system support, and performance. Valve’s compatibility information explains the review categories.

- Verified: the clearest indication that a game works out of the box on Steam Deck.
- Playable: the game works, but may require adjustments to settings or controls.
- Unsupported: Valve has identified a problem when playing on Steam Deck.
- Unreviewed: compatibility has not been established by Valve; this is unknown, not an automatic failure.
These classifications describe Valve’s review for Steam Deck, not a certification for every Linux system. Valve reported more than 25,000 games categorized as Playable or Verified in a 2026 Steamworks presentation; that dated aggregate does not establish that those games work on every Linux device or guarantee a result for any particular title. Valve Steamworks presentation.
2. Find out whether the game is native or uses Proton
A game can run on Linux through a native Linux version or by running its Windows version through Proton. Valve describes Proton as a “compatibility tool for Steam Play based on Wine and additional components.” Valve’s Proton project documentation describes the tool. Steam Play can make some Windows-only games work on Linux, but support is game-specific.

A Windows requirement on a Steam store page does not, by itself, prove that the game cannot run through Proton. Treat native support and Proton compatibility as separate possibilities, and use the Deck category and notes or recent game-specific reports to assess the title.
3. Verify anti-cheat and online play separately
A game launching successfully does not prove that multiplayer, anti-cheat, or other online features will work. Anti-cheat is part of Valve’s compatibility review, but a developer can still block Linux access or make online play unavailable. Check a current announcement from the game’s developer for the specific title and mode you want to play.
Apex Legends illustrates why this check matters: its developer announced a Linux block in October 2024. Electronic Arts’ announcement applies to that game; it is not evidence about other titles.

Operating-system compatibility and hardware performance are different questions. Compare the game’s minimum and recommended requirements with the handheld or mini PC’s processor, graphics hardware, memory, and storage. Then consider the resolution and performance target you expect. A Deck compatibility result does not establish that a different CPU or GPU can deliver the same experience.

There is no universal pass/fail specification for the varied Linux handhelds and mini PCs covered here. Check the exact model’s hardware and its Linux distribution, SteamOS version, and driver support rather than treating “Linux” as one standard configuration. Valve’s SteamOS page describes SteamOS as “Valve’s Linux-based operating system.” Valve SteamOS.
5. Use hands-on reports carefully
If Valve has not reviewed a game, look for recent reports covering the same game, similar hardware and operating system, and the game’s current patch. Confirm whether a report tested the online mode you care about, not only whether the game opened. Community reports can help corroborate compatibility, but they are anecdotal rather than a guarantee.
Compare devices by the parts that affect your games
When choosing between a handheld and a mini PC, compare the configuration and use case rather than relying on the word “Linux.”
Quick Recap
- Game compatibility: native Linux support, Proton or Steam Play results, Steam Deck notes, and current developer restrictions.
- Performance: processor and graphics hardware relative to the game’s requirements and your target resolution and performance.
- Controls and display: whether the game is practical with the device’s input methods and screen. These are among Valve’s Deck review considerations.
- Operating-system support: the exact distribution or SteamOS version and driver support for the device.
- Online features: anti-cheat and multiplayer access for the current game version.
