Check the language information for the exact game and edition before buying or troubleshooting. A Nintendo Switch 2 uses your selected system language for a game only if that game supports it; changing the console setting cannot add a translation the game does not include.
How to check a game’s language support
- Identify the exact title and edition. Check the edition and regional product listing for the version you plan to play. If it is an original Nintendo Switch game, check Switch 2 compatibility separately from language support.
- Review the official product or store listing. Look for language details for that specific title and edition. Nintendo’s general guidance does not establish a single standardized location or label for this information on every listing, so do not assume that every game presents it in the same way.
- Ask the publisher if the listing is unclear. For a third-party game, contact its publisher for title-specific details. Nintendo directs players to publishers for specific compatibility information about non-Nintendo software.
- Confirm which language elements are covered. Where the listing distinguishes them, check text, menus, subtitles, and spoken audio separately. Support for one does not establish support for all the others.
Nintendo’s general rule is that Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch software uses the console’s selected language only when the game supports that language: Nintendo Support: Can I Play My Game in Another Language?

Set the system language after confirming support
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > System > Language.
- Select the language you want.
- Select Restart when prompted.
The restart closes suspended software. After the console restarts, launch the game. If the expected language does not appear, check the game’s own language options and confirm its supported languages with the publisher; game-specific menus vary.
Nintendo documents this procedure here: How to Change the System Language on Nintendo Switch 2.

Check Switch 2 compatibility separately for original Switch games
Language support and hardware compatibility are different questions. Nintendo cautions that some original Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or may not be fully compatible on Switch 2. For details about a non-Nintendo title, Nintendo advises contacting its publisher. A compatibility notice by itself does not establish whether that game supports your preferred language.

Do not confuse system accessibility languages with game localization
Nintendo’s accessibility guide describes language options for system features such as text-to-speech and GameChat speech or text. Those options do not show which languages a particular game supports. Check the game’s own listing or ask its publisher for localization details. Nintendo notes that some accessibility support may require an update: Guide to Accessibility Features on Nintendo Switch 2.
