To check whether a Nintendo Switch game will work on your console, identify the exact console model and game edition, then consult Nintendo’s compatibility lookup—especially when checking a Switch game for Nintendo Switch 2. Read any title-specific notes about controllers, accessories, or features: a game can have limitations even when it is playable.
1. Identify your console and the exact game
Check the console’s name on the device or in its system settings. Distinguish Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, and Nintendo Switch 2. Then note the game’s exact title and whether the package or store listing identifies it as a Nintendo Switch game or a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

The edition label matters, but it does not replace checking compatibility. A Switch 2 Edition adds an upgrade pack to the original game; its enhanced features are for Switch 2, while Nintendo says the original game remains playable on Switch. Availability and upgrade-pack contents vary by title. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition information explains the distinction.
2. Look up a Switch game for use on Switch 2
Open Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility lookup and search for the exact game. Check the result and read the notes rather than relying on a general statement that Switch games work on Switch 2.

Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Switch games, but some may not be supported or fully compatible. Its guidance notes that support can change as Nintendo conducts further testing or issues updates. The lookup is therefore the most useful place to check a title before buying or relying on it.
3. Check for controller and accessory requirements
Compatibility is not always a simple yes-or-no question about whether the game starts. A game or feature may need an original Switch controller, a particular camera, or an accessory that does not work the same way with Switch 2 hardware. Read the title’s notes for those conditions.

Original Joy-Con and specific features
Nintendo lists Ring Fit Adventure as playable on Switch 2 by attaching original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con to the included Ring-Con; Joy-Con 2 do not attach to that accessory. In 1-2-Switch, features that use the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera require an original Joy-Con (R). Nintendo also identifies Nintendo Labo kits with physical-fit or controller requirements and notes that the experience can differ. These are examples, not a substitute for checking your own title. See Nintendo UK’s compatibility guidance for its listed cases.
What carries over—and what does not
Original Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the console. Nintendo says they need a Switch console or a compatible charging accessory to charge. The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. Do not assume that every controller or accessory carries over unchanged; check the game’s requirements and the relevant accessory guidance. Nintendo’s accessory compatibility information covers these limits.

4. Confirm access to the game copy
Physical game cards
Switch 2 can read compatible physical Nintendo Switch game cards. The card being recognized does not by itself establish that every title or feature works fully, so check the title in Nintendo’s compatibility lookup.
Digital games
For a digital purchase, make sure you can access the Nintendo Account and license associated with the game on the console where you intend to play. Nintendo describes virtual game cards for use across up to two consoles, as well as online access conditions for other consoles. Check Nintendo’s digital game guidance for the account and console arrangement that applies to you.

5. Ask the publisher when Nintendo’s listing is not enough
For a game published by another company, Nintendo recommends contacting that game’s publisher for specific compatibility information. This is useful when a listing is unclear or you need confirmation about a particular mode, feature, or accessory.
