How to Check Whether a PC Game Will Run on Your Computer Before Buying

Check the game's official requirements against your PC's exact hardware and operating system before checkout. Minimum specs are a baseline, not a guarantee of smooth play.

Before buying a PC game, compare its current official system requirements with the specifications of the computer you plan to use. Check the operating system, processor, graphics card and VRAM, memory, storage, and any stated graphics API requirements. Meeting the minimum is not a promise of smooth performance, high settings, or even a trouble-free launch.

1. Find the game’s current system requirements

Start with the game’s official store listing or publisher support page. On Steam, scroll to the listing’s System Requirements section. If you’re buying elsewhere, use that storefront’s listing or the publisher’s own support information.

Check the supported operating system as well as the hardware. Some games require 64-bit Windows, so a matching processor or graphics card will not make an unsupported operating system compatible. Requirements can vary by title; use the listing for the exact game rather than assuming another game from the same series has the same needs.

2. Find your computer’s specifications

On Windows, search Start for dxdiag and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Microsoft’s DirectX instructions explain how to check the installed DirectX version on the System tab. DxDiag also reports useful system and display information.

ASUS ROG G700 (2025) Gaming Desktop PC, Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 265F Processor, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 5070, 1TB M.2 NVMe™ PCIe® 4 SSD, 16GB DDR5 RAM, Windows 11 Home, G700TF-DS774
  • Fearless ROG Design – The G700’s dual-glass chassis showcases iconic ROG design with the ROG Slash and Aura Sync RGB lighting. Its 58L capacity supports triple-slot GPUs.
  • Unstoppable Power – Equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7 265F processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB SSD PCIe 4.0 storage for seamless gaming and multitasking.
  • Optimized Thermals – Stay cool with a quad-fan system, while dust filters and efficient airflow ensure long-term reliability.
  • Advanced Connectivity – Game without lag with 2.5Gbps Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, and versatile ports. Dolby Atmos audio and AI noise cancellation enhance sound and communication.
  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.

Record the exact CPU and graphics processor models, the graphics card’s VRAM, installed system memory (RAM), Windows version and system type, and graphics-driver version. If the game lists a storage requirement, check that you have enough free space on the drive where you intend to install it. A PC’s general model name is not enough to identify its configuration: laptops and desktops sold under a shared product name can contain different components.

3. Compare the specifications that matter

Match the computer’s details against the game’s requirement list, one item at a time. Pay particular attention to the exact CPU and GPU models, RAM, supported OS and bitness, storage, and any stated graphics API or feature-level requirement.

  • System: AMD Ryzen 5 5500 3.6GHz 6 Cores | AMD B550 Chipset | 8GB DDR4 | 500GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD | Windows 11 Home
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT 4GB Graphics | 1x HDMI | 1x DisplayPort
  • Connectivity: 4 x USB-A 3.2 | 4 x USB-A 2.0 | 1 x LAN | WiFi 5 | Bluetooth 5.0 | 7.1 Channel Audio
  • Tempered Side Case Panel | Custom RGB Lighting | Keyboard and Mouse
  • 1 Year Parts & Labor Warranty, Free Lifetime Tech Support
  • Graphics: Compare the graphics processor model, not just the amount of VRAM. Integrated graphics may be less capable than a dedicated GPU, and laptop and desktop components with similar names may perform differently.
  • DirectX and graphics features: An installed DirectX version does not prove that the graphics hardware supports every feature the game needs. Check any specific API or feature requirement as well as the version shown in DxDiag.
  • Memory and storage: Check system RAM separately from graphics VRAM, and confirm the listed storage space is available.
  • Operating system: Confirm the edition or version and whether the game requires a 64-bit system.

Microsoft’s DirectX guidance notes that the installed version matters, but hardware support is a separate consideration. Don’t use the DirectX number by itself as a compatibility verdict.

4. Understand minimum versus recommended requirements

Minimum requirements are the developer’s stated lower baseline, not a promise of a particular frame rate or graphics quality. Valve’s Steam performance troubleshooting guidance says that simply meeting system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance. Epic likewise cautions that a computer which only meets minimum requirements probably will not run a game at its highest settings.

Recommended requirements indicate a higher hardware target, but they still do not guarantee a specific frame rate at your chosen resolution or settings. If your PC meets minimum but not recommended specifications, Capcom advises trying low graphics settings in its PC and Steam troubleshooting guide, updated July 22, 2026.

5. Treat borderline matches as uncertain

A PC near a listed threshold may encounter launch or performance problems, according to Steam’s troubleshooting guidance. A simple name-to-name match can also conceal meaningful differences between laptop and desktop GPUs or between integrated and dedicated graphics.

For a close call, look for tests of the same game on the same or closely matching CPU and GPU. Those tests can help set expectations, but reports about another configuration do not guarantee the same result on yours. Official requirements are the starting point for compatibility; the official sources cited here do not establish a single checker or numerical pass score that predicts every game’s performance on every PC.

6. Make the call before checkout

  • One or more listed requirements are below minimum, or the OS is unsupported: Don’t assume the game will work. Check for a more specific compatibility statement from the publisher or evidence for your exact hardware before buying.
  • Your PC meets minimum but not recommended requirements: The game may be a poor fit for high settings. Be prepared to lower graphics settings, and don’t treat the minimum listing as a performance guarantee.
  • Your PC meets or exceeds recommended requirements: That is a stronger match to the listed target, but it still cannot promise a particular frame rate, settings level, or flawless launch.

If sources conflict, use the current official game listing for the developer’s stated requirements and supported OS. A third-party checker may help translate component names, but its result should not override an explicit publisher requirement without explaining the difference.
