Check the exact game’s PlayStation Store listing and, for a physical PS4 copy, its package. Look for “Online play required” or “Persistent internet connection required.” Check “PS Plus required for online play” separately: that label concerns online play and does not, by itself, mean the entire game needs a connection.
Check the exact game and edition
- Identify the title, platform (PS4 or PS5), edition, and—if you have a disc—the region of that copy.
- Open the matching game page in the PlayStation Store for your region. Review the online-feature labels and product information for explicit internet requirements.
- For a physical PS4 game, check the package as well. PlayStation’s PS4 offline guidance says to check the package or Store to see whether a title is online-only. It specifically notes that a disc game designated “online-only” cannot be played without a network connection.
- If the listing and package do not clearly describe offline play, look for the publisher’s official support or product information for that exact edition.
A disc is not proof that a game works offline, and having a single-player mode does not settle the question. Requirements can vary by title, platform, edition, and service state.

Know what each connection label means
“Online play required”
This is direct evidence that online play is required. On its own, it does not explain whether every mode needs a connection or whether a connection is needed outside online play.
“Persistent internet connection required”
This explicitly calls for an ongoing connection. For example, the US PlayStation Store page for The Elder Scrolls Online lists both “Online play required” and “PS Plus required for online play,” and its product information says “PERSISTENT INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED.” These are separate requirements for that game, not a rule for other titles.

“PS Plus required for online play”
This indicates a PlayStation Plus subscription requirement for online play. It is not another way of saying that the whole game requires a persistent internet connection. PlayStation’s PlayStation Plus support directs players to the Store listing to check whether a subscription is required for a game’s online play.
Separate buying or downloading from playing offline
Digital games require internet access to purchase and download. That does not establish whether a game can be played offline after installation. PlayStation’s PS5 Quick Start Guide explains internet access for purchasing and downloading digital games and separately covers disc installation; it does not say that every disc game works offline or that every downloaded game needs internet after installation.

- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
When the listing is unclear, check the publisher’s instructions for the exact version, including any requirements for first launch, setup, or particular modes. Do not infer offline availability from the purchase format alone.
Use platform guidance as context, not a guarantee
PlayStation’s 2013 North American PS4 FAQ said PS4 did not require a persistent internet connection to play games and that users could play single-player titles offline. It separately said online multiplayer required internet and PlayStation Plus. That is historical, platform-level guidance—not confirmation that a particular game, a later PS4 release, or a PS5 game works offline.

Likewise, PlayStation’s Japanese PS4 offline support page addresses PS4 disc games and tells users to check the package or Store for online-only status. It should not be treated as a universal statement about every PS5 game or every digital title.

- Does its listing say “Online play required”?
- Does it explicitly say “Persistent internet connection required”?
- Is internet needed only for multiplayer, or does the listing or publisher describe broader requirements?
- Does that online mode separately require PlayStation Plus?
- Does the publisher specify a connection for initial setup or first launch?
If a requirement is not clearly stated, the Store label alone may not answer whether a particular mode works offline. Use the publisher’s information for that version rather than assuming two editions or platforms behave the same way.
