If you encounter one, the shiny icon above its CP confirms that individual is shiny. Your inventory and Shiny Pokédex show Pokémon you have registered or caught; they do not confirm current availability.
Check whether the species and form are shiny-eligible now
- Identify the exact Pokémon. Note its species and form, including any regional, costume, or event form. Forms can differ in appearance and availability.
- Check official Pokémon GO announcements. Niantic says not every species has a shiny variant available, and some shiny variants can be encountered only during specific events. Check the current event announcement for the relevant Pokémon and event dates. Niantic’s shiny Pokémon help page points players to official updates for availability.
- Match the encounter details. Check that the announcement covers the same form and encounter route you mean, such as wild encounters, raids, research tasks, or other rewards. Availability for one form or route does not by itself establish availability for another.
Niantic’s general help page does not provide a complete live list of eligible species or species-specific shiny odds. If an announcement does not establish the exact Pokémon, form, and encounter window, do not treat a Pokédex entry or an old report as proof that it can be found shiny now.

Confirm whether an individual encounter is shiny
During an encounter, look for the shiny icon above the Pokémon’s CP. Niantic identifies this icon as the confirmation of shiny status. Color alone is not a reliable check: regional forms can look different from their standard forms even when they are not shiny.
Find shiny Pokémon you already have
Search your Pokémon inventory
Open your Pokémon inventory and search shiny to filter for shiny Pokémon already in your collection. Niantic documents this search in its inventory search and filtering guide.

Check the Shiny Pokédex
Open the Pokédex and select the Shiny category to view shiny registration. An outline indicates a shiny form that has not been registered. The Pokédex guide explains this display. Neither a registered entry nor an outline tells you whether that Pokémon is currently available to encounter shiny.
Account for event-only variants and Ditto
Some shiny variants are restricted to particular events. Niantic gives Smeargle, Unown, and Meltan as examples that cannot be encountered shiny outside specific events, so check the announcement and dates rather than assuming an older availability still applies.

Ditto has a special disguise rule: it will not disguise itself as another shiny Pokémon, even when Ditto itself is shiny. A shiny Ditto may disguise itself as a non-shiny Pokémon, so the disguised Pokémon’s appearance is not a way to confirm Ditto’s shiny status.

What to compare when checking a report
- Species and form: Verify the exact Pokémon, including regional or event presentation.
- Encounter route: Check whether the information is about wild spawns, raids, research, or another reward.
- Dates and eligibility: Confirm the event window and any stated conditions.
- Evidence for odds: Do not assume a rate from availability alone. Niantic’s general help page lists encounter routes but does not give species-specific odds.
