Before paying, confirm the console is a PS5 Pro, inspect and test the actual unit, connect it to PlayStation services, and agree on a clean handover. These checks can reduce the chance of buying a damaged, misrepresented, or service-suspended console, but they cannot guarantee future reliability or establish its full ownership history.
Before you meet the seller
- Review the seller’s ratings and feedback. Ask for a current video showing the console powering on, connecting to the internet, and testing its ports, buttons, and disc drive if it has one. Sony recommends these checks in its used-product buying guide.
- Ask what is included, whether the console has been opened or repaired, and whether the original purchase receipt is available. A receipt may be needed for warranty service under Sony’s US and Canada terms.
- Arrange a safe place to meet and enough time to test the console before paying. Sony advises walking away if something feels wrong and being cautious about offers that seem too good to be true.
Confirm it is a PS5 Pro
Check the model identification on the console rather than relying on the listing or the seller’s description. Sony’s PS5 Pro safety guide identifies the CFI-70XX family. If the model identifier does not match that family, pause the sale and clarify what is being offered; the cited guide does not provide a complete visual comparison for every revision or regional package.

Inspect and test the console in person
Check the case, serial number, and included items
Look over the case and connectors for damage, signs of tampering, or a mismatch with the listing. Confirm that the serial number is present and legible. Sony warns buyers to watch for removed serial numbers and broken warranty seals in its buying guide. Compare the included items with what the seller promised.
Power it on and test the basics
Start the console and check for stable image output. Test the buttons and ports that you can access, and observe how it behaves during use. Listen for abnormal noise and watch for signs of overheating or other damage. Sony’s guide recommends an in-person inspection because video cannot establish every aspect of image quality, condition, or operation.

Verify internet and PlayStation service access
Connect the console to the internet and check that it can access PlayStation services before handing over payment. Sony says a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. Its buying guide does not document a separate public lookup tool for buyers to check theft or suspension status, so an online service check is a practical test—not proof of the console’s ownership history.
Test the disc drive, if the console has one
Insert and eject a known-good compatible game disc and confirm the console reads it. If possible, try another compatible disc to distinguish a problem with one disc from a drive issue. Sony notes that PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs; those are not suitable test media. See Sony’s disc playback guidance.
Agree on a clean handover
Ask the seller to deactivate the console and confirm that they no longer have access to it, as Sony advises in its buying guide. Before the sale, the seller should back up any data they want to keep and reset the console. Sony’s transfer guidance explains backing up and resetting; a reset deletes user and game data and cannot be undone. Make sure the seller understands that deletion before proceeding.
Understand what warranty evidence does—and does not—establish
Sony’s US buying guide says, “Third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty*,” while noting that certified-refurbished PlayStation products include warranty. This distinction does not mean every used console is necessarily ineligible for service; coverage depends on the product and applicable terms.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Sony’s PS5 warranty information for the US and Canada states a one-year warranty period from the original purchase and requires valid proof of that purchase for service. Do not assume those terms apply outside the named regions or to every resale. Treat warranty coverage as uncertain unless the seller can provide documentation and you have confirmed the relevant local terms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to walk away
- The seller refuses a reasonable functional test or will not allow you to check service access.
- The console cannot access PlayStation services during your check.
- The serial number is missing or altered, or the model identifier does not match the PS5 Pro family.
- The seller’s account of the console conflicts with its condition, listing, or documentation.
These are reasons to avoid the risk, not proof that a console was stolen or a prediction that it will fail later. Sony’s guide also recommends walking away if something feels wrong.
Compare the whole offer, not just the asking price
Assess the price alongside the console’s condition, test results, access to services, seller reputation, included items, return terms, and any documented warranty or proof of original purchase. The available official guidance does not establish current resale prices or a reliable price cutoff, so a low asking price alone cannot show that an offer is safe or fair.
