To livestream on YouTube, a channel generally needs to be verified and free of livestream restrictions from the previous 90 days. YouTube also says creators must be at least 16. The 50-subscriber minimum applies to livestreaming from the YouTube mobile app—not to every way of going live. Mobile streaming also requires a supported device and may take up to 24 hours to activate the first time.
Check the requirements for your streaming method
Start by deciding whether you plan to stream from the YouTube mobile app or from a computer. YouTube’s general requirements apply across methods; the subscriber threshold and device rules described below are specific to mobile livestreaming.
| Requirement | Mobile app | Computer |
|---|---|---|
| Verified channel | Required | Required |
| No livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days | Required | Required |
| At least 50 subscribers | Required | No minimum is stated in YouTube’s cited general computer-streaming requirements |
| Device | Supported phone or tablet: Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+ | Computer streaming can use a webcam or an encoder |
| First-time activation | May take up to 24 hours | No universal activation time is stated in the cited computer guidance |
These are channel eligibility checks, not gear recommendations. A better camera, microphone, or encoder does not satisfy an account requirement or remove a restriction.
How to check your channel, step by step
- Confirm your method. For the YouTube app on a phone or tablet, check the mobile requirements, including 50 subscribers. For computer streaming, YouTube describes webcam and encoder methods; the mobile subscriber minimum should not be treated as a universal threshold.
- Verify the channel. YouTube lists channel verification as a general livestreaming requirement. If the channel is not verified, complete YouTube’s verification process before trying to start a stream.
- Review channel notices for livestream restrictions. YouTube’s general rule is that the channel must not have had livestream restrictions in the past 90 days. Check notices in YouTube Studio and any restriction information YouTube has provided. Policy or copyright issues can lead to temporary or permanent loss of livestream access.
- If using mobile, confirm the extra conditions. The channel needs at least 50 subscribers, livestreaming must be turned on, and the device must meet YouTube’s listed operating-system requirements: Android 8.0 or later, or iOS 8 or later.
- Allow time for first activation. YouTube says enabling livestreaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours before a first stream can start. This timing is specified for first-time mobile activation; it is not a guaranteed resolution time for every account issue.
- Open the setup flow for your method. In the YouTube mobile app, choose Create, then Live. On a computer, use YouTube’s desktop live setup flow for webcam or encoder streaming. If setup remains unavailable, the flow may help identify what to check, but it is not a guaranteed dashboard that explains every account-specific failure.
Why can’t I go live on YouTube?
The Go Live option is missing in the mobile app
Check whether the channel has at least 50 subscribers, is verified, has no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days, and has livestreaming enabled. Confirm that the phone or tablet meets the supported operating-system requirement. If this is the first time livestreaming has been enabled, allow up to 24 hours for activation.

Computer streaming is unavailable
Check channel verification and whether YouTube has imposed a livestream restriction within the past 90 days. The 50-subscriber condition is a mobile-app requirement, not a general computer-streaming threshold. YouTube describes computer livestreaming through a webcam or an encoder.
YouTube says the channel is restricted
Read the notice and follow YouTube’s instructions. Livestream access can be temporarily or permanently disabled for policy or copyright reasons. YouTube prohibits using another channel to livestream while an active restriction is in effect, so switching channels is not an acceptable workaround.

Age and other policy considerations
YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says a creator must be at least 16 to livestream. It also warns that if a 13- to 15-year-old appears in a stream without a visibly present adult, live chat may be disabled and access to chat or other features may be temporarily limited. Eligibility is only one part of going live: follow YouTube’s copyright and community rules, and respond to any account-specific notices through YouTube rather than trying to evade a restriction.
