Open the stream’s YouTube watch page and check its current live status. Then check whether playback is at the live edge and whether chat is happening now. A playable video or visible chat alone does not prove the broadcast is still live: the video may be an archive, and its chat may be replaying.
Check the stream on YouTube
- Open the video’s YouTube watch page. Use the original page rather than an embedded player or reposted clip.
- Look for current live status. YouTube’s interface can vary by device, so treat the page’s live indication as a practical clue rather than relying on one specific label or icon. YouTube describes live streams as media broadcast in real time; a channel may also leave highlights or a replay on its channel after the broadcast ends. YouTube Help: Learn about live streams.
- Check whether playback is at the live edge. If the player indicates you are behind or offers a control to return to the live point, use it before deciding. YouTube DVR can let viewers pause and rewind during an active stream, so a delayed picture does not by itself mean the broadcast has ended. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams.
- Check chat in context. Current Live Chat activity can support the conclusion that a stream is live, but first make sure you are not looking at chat replay on an archive.
Tell current chat from chat replay
YouTube says Live Chat is an interaction during a live stream or Premiere. After a stream ends, its archive may show messages from the original broadcast as Live Chat replay. YouTube Help states, “After a live stream has ended, Live chat replay is available on all stream archives.” Creators can turn replay off, and edited streams may not have it. Live chat itself is unavailable after the stream ends; comments appear below the video instead. YouTube Help: Moderate live chat and YouTube Help: Learn about Live Chat.
- Evidence of a current broadcast: current live status, playback at the live edge, and chat that appears to be updating now.
- Evidence of an archive: the channel has ended the broadcast, playback is an archived video, or chat is explicitly presented as replay.
- Not enough on its own: a video that plays, gameplay that looks current, a chat panel, or a stream that appears paused or delayed.
Why a live gaming stream can look like a replay
DVR puts you behind the action
On a stream with DVR available, you can pause or rewind while the broadcast continues. Resuming playback continues from the paused point, not necessarily from the newest moment. Return to the live edge before judging whether the broadcast is active. YouTube notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; the relevant limit can also vary on some devices and older app versions. An archive can still play like a livestream
A gaming stream replay is watchable after its broadcast ends. The fact that gameplay continues on screen, or that messages appear beside it, does not mean the channel is broadcasting now. Replays and highlights may remain available as videos on the channel after the live event. YouTube Help: Learn about live streams.

If the status is still unclear
YouTube’s guidance does not establish one universal status label or identical player controls for every interface. If the watch page, live-edge control, and chat do not give a clear answer, check the channel’s current live listing. If that is also inconclusive, describe the status as unclear rather than claiming the stream is live or over.
