Before buying an upcoming PC game, compare your computer with the game’s current official system requirements. Check the operating system, CPU, GPU, memory, storage and any required graphics features separately. A compatibility checker can make that comparison easier, but it cannot guarantee how smoothly an unreleased game will run.
Start with the game’s official requirements
Open the publisher’s page or the store page for the exact PC edition and storefront you plan to use. On Steam, scroll to the game’s System Requirements section. Check operating-system compatibility as well as hardware: a game may not support your current OS even if the PC’s components are powerful enough. Record the listed minimum and recommended CPU, graphics card, RAM, storage and operating system. Note any stated graphics API or feature requirements, too. Requirements can change during development, so revisit the official page close to release.
Find your PC’s actual specifications
On Windows, use the built-in tools to identify your components rather than relying on a remembered model or a general description such as “gaming laptop.”

- Check DirectX and basic system information: Search Windows for
dxdiagand open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. On the System tab, inspect DirectX Version under System Information. Microsoft’s instructions are at Open and run DxDiag. - Identify the graphics device: In DxDiag, select the display tab or tabs and read the device information. If more than one graphics device appears, note each one and determine which is used for games.
- Check CPU and installed memory: Open Windows Settings and go to System > About, or open Task Manager and select Performance. These show the processor and installed RAM.
- Check available storage: In File Explorer, open This PC and check free space on the drive where you would install the game. The game’s listed storage requirement is not the same as free space currently available.
The DirectX version installed in Windows does not prove that the GPU supports every graphics feature a game requires. Steam notes that hardware shader limitations can matter even when a suitable DirectX software version is present: Steam system requirements guidance.
Compare each requirement separately
Work through the official requirements line by line. A PC can meet one requirement and miss another, so an overall impression of its age or power is not enough.

- Operating system: Confirm the game supports your Windows version and whether it requires a 64-bit operating system.
- Processor: Compare the exact CPU model with the listed minimum or recommended processor.
- Graphics card: Compare the exact GPU model. Laptop and desktop versions with similar names may not perform alike, so match the variant rather than just the product family.
- Memory: Compare installed RAM with the stated amount.
- Storage: Confirm you have enough free space on the intended installation drive.
- Graphics API and features: Check any stated API, shader or other graphics-feature requirement. A DirectX version number alone is not a substitute for confirming GPU support.

What minimum and recommended requirements tell you
Minimum requirements are a screening threshold
Meeting a game’s minimum requirements suggests that your PC is within the publisher’s stated baseline, but it does not promise smooth performance or establish a particular frame rate, resolution or graphics setting.

Recommended requirements still need context
Recommended specifications can help indicate a stronger target, but publishers may not state the resolution, settings or frame-rate goal behind them. Treat them as guidance, not a guarantee of a specific experience.
Should you use a PC compatibility checker?
A third-party checker can automate the comparison between a detected or entered PC configuration and a game’s requirements. Its result is only as useful as its hardware detection and the requirements data it uses, including how current that data is. A pass/fail result is a comparison, not a test of your computer running an unreleased game. If a checker reports that a component falls short, compare the component and game requirement yourself before drawing a conclusion. In particular, verify the exact GPU variant and any required graphics features. Do not plan an upgrade until you know which part is the limiting factor and what performance target you want.

Once the game is available, a game-specific benchmark or in-game monitoring gives more direct evidence than a pre-release compatibility estimate.

Run a built-in benchmark if available
Check whether the game includes a benchmark, then run it at the resolution and graphics settings you intend to use. PCGamingWiki maintains a list of games with built-in benchmarks, including some standalone benchmark tools: List of games that support benchmarking.
Monitor performance while playing
Steam’s in-game performance monitor can display FPS, CPU and GPU metrics, and system and video memory while you play. This can help show whether performance matches your needs on your own PC: Steam performance monitor.
For a title that has not launched, no specific PC can be confirmed from requirements alone without the game, computer specifications and desired performance target. Recheck the official requirements near launch; updates, patches and drivers can affect compatibility and performance.
