The permission must cover continuous live streaming on YouTube, the territories where your stream can be watched, and any archive or replay. Ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist, keep written proof, and check YouTube Studio during and after the broadcast. A license alone does not guarantee that YouTube’s automated systems will leave a stream uninterrupted.
What you need permission to use
A music track involves more than one right. YouTube distinguishes rights in the sound recording—the master—from rights in the underlying musical composition. A permission covering only one layer may leave the other uncleared.
- Sound recording: identify who owns or can authorize use of the exact master recording. Recordings of the same song can have different owners and permissions.
- Composition: identify the songwriter or publisher and whoever is authorized to grant the relevant composition rights, including public-performance rights where applicable.
- Other participants: check whether the proposed use requires permissions from additional rights holders or royalty participants. Ownership and licensing arrangements vary by track and jurisdiction.
YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility on the provider to have the rights needed for the live use, including music rights, and refer to requirements in the territory where the stream takes place. Its guidance also describes rights needed for exploitation on Google services worldwide. Do not assume a permission restricted to one country or use covers a stream that is available internationally. Confirm the scope with the rights holder and seek qualified local advice if the relevant territories or rights layers are unclear.
Check every track before adding it to the rotation
- Identify the exact music. Record the title, performers, version, and recording identifiers if available. A cover, remix, alternate master, or game soundtrack version may involve different rights and owners from another recording of the same composition.
- Find the authorized representatives. Verify who controls the master and who can authorize the composition rights. Labels commonly hold master-use rights; performing rights organisations frequently control public-performance licenses for compositions. These are common arrangements, not proof of ownership for a particular track.
- Get written permission for the actual use. Ask for permission that explicitly covers continuous live streaming on YouTube, the planned territories, monetization if applicable, and recording, archiving, or replaying the stream. Confirm the channel and any limits on duration, audience territory, or use. The contract wording and legal requirements depend on the agreement and jurisdiction.
- Request Content ID allowlisting. Ask the rights holder to add the specific YouTube channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm that the allowlisting applies to that channel and the territory in which the stream will run. YouTube warns that licensed third-party content can still interrupt a live stream if the channel is not allowlisted.
- Keep an audit file. Save the signed agreement or other written permission, receipt if relevant, track and version identifiers, rights-holder contact details, territory and use limits, effective dates, and confirmation of allowlisting. Make sure someone managing the stream can find the records quickly.
- Test with a permitted track. Check the live control room and YouTube Studio for warnings while testing. When the test ends, inspect the completed archive for claims. A clean test is useful operationally, but it does not replace permission or guarantee that later broadcasts will not be flagged.
Compare licenses against the stream you plan to run
Before accepting a license, check each of these points in its terms rather than relying on a general description such as “royalty-free,” “cleared,” or “licensed.”

Do not treat Creator Music as live-stream clearance
YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ says it does not support licensing for live content. Its permissions are described for videos uploaded to YouTube, and Creator Music track terms cannot be assumed to cover a continuous live broadcast. A Creator Music license, revenue-sharing option, or downloaded track is therefore not clearance for a 24/7 radio stream.
YouTube’s guidance describes Creator Music as available to U.S. YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion outside the U.S. pending. Its rights-holder guidance says paid licenses were deprecated from August 10, 2026; existing licenses remain in effect until the end of their terms as the service transitions to gratis licenses. Availability and rights-holder arrangements can change, so check YouTube’s current Creator Music guidance if you are considering it for eligible uploaded videos. None of those changes makes it a live-content license.

Monitor the stream and respond to claims
- During the broadcast: monitor YouTube’s live control room and YouTube Studio for copyright warnings or interruptions. Keep the track records and rights-holder contact details accessible.
- If YouTube flags a track: remove or mute the flagged material as appropriate, then review the dashboard for restrictions or strikes. Contact the rights holder to verify that the permission covers the exact track, channel, territory, and use, and ask them to confirm Content ID allowlisting.
- After the broadcast: check the archive for Content ID claims. YouTube notes that archived live streams can receive claims after the live stream ends, so archive and replay use need to be covered as well.
YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate a live stream if third-party content continues to appear. A permission letter does not itself prevent automated enforcement; the rights holder’s allowlisting and a clear resolution path matter operationally.
