Vulkan support requires both a loader and a GPU driver implementation; having a Vulkan-capable operating system alone does not prove that a particular GPU or game can use it.
What you need to check
Vulkan is exposed through software components as well as the graphics hardware. The Vulkan Documentation Project explains that Vulkan requires both a loader and a driver, also called an implementation. A functioning loader cannot provide support if the intended GPU driver is missing or not exposed. See the Vulkan Guide.
Before troubleshooting, identify the GPU model and operating system. This matters on laptops and desktops with both integrated and discrete graphics: a diagnostic may list more than one device, and the GPU selected by a game may not be the one you expected.
Check Vulkan support with vulkaninfo
- Open a terminal or command prompt on Windows or Linux.
- Run
vulkaninfo. The Vulkan Guide recommends it for inspecting Vulkan support and the capabilities visible on the system. - Look for the physical device corresponding to the GPU you intend to use. Record its reported API version and review the capabilities listed for it.
If the command is unavailable, it may not be installed or available on your system. The Vulkan Guide also documents the Vulkan Installation Analyzer (VIA), included in the Vulkan SDK, as a way to validate Vulkan components and the loader/driver installation. If your intended GPU does not appear, that does not identify a single cause. It can indicate a missing, outdated, or incorrectly exposed driver, or that the diagnostic is not seeing the device you meant to check. Confirm the GPU identity and driver path before deciding that the hardware itself lacks support.
Interpret the reported Vulkan version
The reported API version is useful, but it is not a complete compatibility verdict. Vulkan distinguishes instance and physical-device versions, and an application may require particular device extensions or features. The Vulkan Guide states that Vulkan API minor versions 1.0 through 1.4 are backward compatible, but backward compatibility does not guarantee that a device implements every capability a specific game uses. For a game that reports a Vulkan error, compare the game’s stated requirements with the version, extensions, and features reported for the GPU it actually uses. A higher version number by itself does not establish that every required feature is present.

Use the official support page for the exact GPU model and operating system. Avoid choosing a driver solely because it is the newest one shown for a different model or platform.

NVIDIA GeForce, RTX, or Quadro
Use NVIDIA’s driver search and select the product and operating system that match your system. NVIDIA distinguishes recommended/WHQL, beta, Studio, and production driver categories; beta releases are preview builds under qualification testing and may include significant issues. NVIDIA’s Vulkan driver page lists its current general-release Vulkan driver information for Windows and Linux. Model support and version details can change, so consult the live vendor pages rather than relying on a model list copied from an older guide.
AMD Radeon
Choose the official Radeon software package for the exact GPU and operating system from AMD’s support resources. AMD GPUOpen maintains a Radeon Vulkan driver table mapping Adrenalin releases to Windows Driver Store and Vulkan version information. Check the current table for the release applicable to your card instead of treating an older row as current.

Intel graphics, Linux distributions, and OEM systems
For Intel graphics, a Linux distribution’s packaged driver, or an OEM-managed laptop, follow the support instructions for the exact GPU or computer model and operating system. Driver availability and installation steps vary; the vendor references above do not establish one universal procedure for these cases.

Verify after installation
- Run the official driver installer and follow its prompts. Restart if the installer requests it.
- Run
vulkaninfoagain, or use VIA to validate the Vulkan components. - Confirm that the intended GPU appears and check its reported version and capabilities again.
- If the game still fails, verify which GPU the game is using and compare its requirements with that device’s reported capabilities.
If Vulkan is still missing
- Confirm the diagnostic is listing the intended GPU, especially on a system with integrated and discrete graphics.
- Check that the installed driver matches the exact GPU and operating system, using the appropriate vendor or OEM support page.
- Use VIA to help validate the loader and driver components where supported.
- Do not assume a graphics-card replacement is necessary based only on one missing-device result; first establish which GPU and driver path the system is reporting.
