To find out whether your PC can run a next-gen FPS, compare its exact components and compatibility features with the game’s current official PC requirements. Check the CPU, graphics card and video memory, RAM, Windows version, storage type and free space, plus any security or hardware prerequisites. Meeting a game’s minimum tier is not the same as meeting its recommended or high-frame-rate tier—and none of those tiers guarantees a particular result on your PC.
Start with the game and the experience you want
There is no universal specification for a “next-gen FPS.” Requirements vary by game, and the target matters: you might want the game to launch, play at the publisher’s recommended settings, or deliver high frame rates at a particular resolution. Find the latest PC requirements on the game’s official publisher or developer page, or its official storefront listing. Do not use one game’s requirements as a proxy for another.
For example, Activision describes Call of Duty: Black Ops 7’s recommended tier as targeting 60 FPS in most situations at high settings. Its competitive/Ultra 4K tier is intended for high FPS with a high-refresh monitor or high-FPS 4K play. Those are different targets, not interchangeable definitions of “can run.” Activision’s Black Ops 7 PC requirements
Find your PC’s actual specifications
Record the full model names rather than relying on broad labels such as “Core i7” or “GeForce RTX.” Generations and models within those families differ. On a desktop with a dedicated graphics card, identify the GPU actually used for games; integrated graphics are not automatically equivalent.

- CPU: exact processor model.
- GPU and VRAM: exact graphics card model and its video-memory capacity.
- System RAM: installed memory in gigabytes.
- Operating system: Windows version and whether it is 64-bit.
- Storage: whether the game drive is an SSD or HDD, and how much free space it has.
- Other features: DirectX compatibility and any listed firmware, security, instruction-set, or graphics-card requirements.
Use Windows’ system information and Task Manager, or your PC manufacturer’s specification page, to identify components. If you are unsure which graphics processor a game will use, check the PC or GPU manufacturer’s instructions for your specific system.
Compare every requirement, not just the graphics card
Match each line in the game’s requirements against your system. Check the exact CPU and GPU models, VRAM, RAM, Windows edition and version, DirectX, internet requirements, storage type and capacity, and any additional notes. A GPU that appears to qualify does not override an unsupported operating system or a required security feature that is disabled.

Black Ops 7 illustrates how specific these notes can be: its requirements list TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, say supported Intel and AMD processors must have AVX, and require Resizable BAR for Intel Arc GPUs. Its publisher also says other security measures may be enforced. Check Activision’s current requirements for the full notes.
Use requirement tiers as targets, not guarantees
Minimum requirements are a compatibility threshold, not a promise of high settings or a specific frame rate. Recommended and higher-performance tiers describe more demanding targets. Compare your PC with the tier that reflects how you want to play; if one component falls short, note which one rather than treating the whole PC as an automatic pass or failure.

Check both storage type and free capacity
Having enough space is different from having the right kind of drive. Black Ops 7 lists an SSD and 115 GB available at launch, with additional space potentially needed for mandatory updates. The Last of Us Part I lists 100 GB of SSD storage for both its minimum and recommended tiers; Naughty Dog recommends SSD use for optimal performance and warns that an older HDD may cause issues. These are examples for those games, not universal storage requirements.
Check the drive where you intend to install the game, not just total capacity across all drives. Leave room for updates and confirm the publisher’s current requirement, since storage needs can change. If you plan to add an SSD, first check your PC’s supported interface, form factor, available slot or bay, and compatibility.

What to do if one requirement is missing
- Verify the comparison. Recheck the component model, the selected game tier, and the latest official requirements. A near-match or a similarly named part is not proof that it meets the listed requirement.
- Check whether the missing feature can be enabled. Firmware and security requirements may depend on the PC’s hardware and configuration. Follow instructions from the PC or motherboard manufacturer rather than changing settings blindly.
- Assess upgrade compatibility before buying. A graphics card must fit the case and work with the power supply and connectors; CPU upgrades depend on the motherboard and platform. Drive interfaces, slots, cooling, and form factor also vary by PC. The game’s requirements page cannot tell you which replacement parts fit your system.
- Update drivers using current guidance. Driver recommendations can become outdated. Check the game publisher’s current notes and the graphics-card manufacturer’s support page instead of treating a launch-era driver version as evergreen.
A shortfall in one tier does not by itself tell you which upgrade is worthwhile. Consider the experience you want, which requirement is unmet, whether the rest of the PC supports a compatible upgrade, and whether another component would still fall below your target.
Use a benchmark to check actual performance
When you can access the game, an in-game benchmark can provide evidence from your own hardware and settings. Call of Duty says Black Ops 7 includes a built-in PC Benchmark Tool to analyze PC hardware performance. Run it with the resolution and settings you plan to use, then assess whether the result suits your frame-rate target. A requirements match alone cannot establish the performance of an individual PC.
Keep the answer current
Game requirements and storage needs can change after launch. Recheck the official page before installing or upgrading, especially if you are relying on launch-era figures. A reliable yes-or-no assessment needs the specific game, your PC’s full specifications, and the settings, resolution, and frame rate you want.
