To see the system software version installed on your PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Sony says Up to date appears beneath the version when the console has the latest version. For past release announcements, use Sony’s public update posts; they are not a record of updates installed on your specific console.
Check the system software version installed on your PS5
- From the PS5 home screen, select Settings.
- Go to System > System Software > Console Information.
- Read the system software version shown on the screen. If Sony reports that the latest version is installed, Up to date appears beneath it. Sony’s PS5 system software support page documents this menu path.
Check for and install an available update
The installed version and update availability are different checks: the first tells you what is on the console now; the second checks whether Sony offers a newer version.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software. Sony says Update Available appears when a newer update is available.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to install it. Do not turn off the console during installation; Sony warns an interruption can damage the console.

Where to find PS5 update history
Updates attempted on your console
Sony’s troubleshooting instructions cover a recent system-software update in Downloads/Uploads, where you can inspect its error information or retry it. Press the PS button, open Downloads/Uploads, highlight the system-software update, and choose View Error Info or Try Again, as appropriate. This helps troubleshoot a download; it is not a complete list of every version previously installed.

Public release announcements
For dated information about releases, consult the PlayStation Blog’s PS5 system-update announcements. Those posts provide a public release record, not a per-console installation log. The version shown in Console Information, the update availability status, and Sony’s public announcements answer three different questions.
If an update will not download
Retry the update
Open Downloads/Uploads from the PS button menu, select the affected system-software update, and use View Error Info to see details or Try Again to retry it. Follow Sony’s current troubleshooting steps if the retry fails.

Use a USB drive as a manual-update fallback
A computer-assisted update is optional; it is not needed just to check the installed version or use a normal internet update. Sony’s USB procedure requires a drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Create a PS5/UPDATE folder on the drive, save the official update file there as PS5UPDATE.PUP, connect the drive to the console, start Safe Mode, and choose the update-from-USB option. Use Sony’s current instructions for the official file and exact Safe Mode prompts.
Do not confuse updating with reinstalling
Reinstalling system software is not a routine way to check the version or view release history. Sony warns: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” Use that option only when its consequences are understood and Sony’s troubleshooting instructions call for it.
