To check for packet loss on a Linux VPS streaming to YouTube, test the actual ingest hostname and transport your encoder uses while the problem is happening. For RTMPS, a TCP-based mtr report to port 443 is a useful starting point. A loss percentage at an intermediate hop alone does not show that the same fraction of your live stream’s data was lost.
What you need to establish
The question is whether the VPS-to-YouTube path is degrading at the time your stream has problems—not whether an Indian VPS is inherently prone to packet loss. The route depends on the particular host, active ingest destination, transport, and time. The available guidance establishes no India-specific packet-loss statistic or universal loss threshold for YouTube VPS streams.
Keep three kinds of evidence distinct: route-probe results, the encoder’s network-related counters or errors, and YouTube’s stream-health notices. Encoding, CPU, input, or capacity problems can affect a stream without being packet loss on the route.
Find the exact YouTube destination and transport
In the active stream configuration in YouTube Live Control Room, copy the ingest URL and identify the hostname and protocol actually configured in your encoder. Do not substitute a hostname from an old setup or guess a default endpoint. YouTube directs streamers to obtain the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Its guidance recommends RTMPS; for SSL errors it suggests specifying port 443, and for timeouts it advises checking the URL and encoder support for RTMPS. YouTube: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Never share a stream key in a diagnostic report. Redact it from screenshots, copied configuration, logs, and support requests; the hostname and port are what you need for the route test.

mtr -T -P 443 -rw -c 100 <ingest-hostname>
This example uses TCP probes to port 443, report mode, a wide report, and 100 cycles. The Ubuntu Bionic manual documents mtr 0.92-1 options for TCP probing (-T), port selection (-P), report mode (-r), wide output (-w), and cycle count (-c). Option support can differ across installed versions, so check mtr --help or the local manual if an option is rejected. The cited manual is for Ubuntu Bionic, not a guarantee about every current Linux distribution: Ubuntu manpage: mtr.
Repeat and timestamp the reports
Save timestamped output during the fault and at an unaffected time for comparison. Record the time zone and note the matching encoder counters and YouTube stream-health notices. A single report taken outside the failure window may not describe the route when the stream was impaired.

Interpret mtr without overclaiming
- Loss at one intermediate hop only: If later hops, including the destination, respond without comparable loss, the intermediate router may be deprioritizing diagnostic replies. Do not treat that hop’s reported percentage as the stream’s loss rate.
- Loss that continues through later hops: Repeated reports showing degradation beyond the first affected hop are more concerning than an isolated intermediate-hop result.
- Persistent destination loss: This is stronger evidence of a path problem, especially when it recurs during stream trouble, but it still does not prove that the live TCP stream had an identical loss rate.
- Stable reports during trouble: Look beyond route loss—check encoder configuration, CPU or input issues, and available sustained outbound capacity.
The Ubuntu mtr manual cautions that modern routers may give ICMP echo packets lower priority, making the reported reliability of those routers worse than actual reliability. This is a reason to interpret probe behavior carefully, not to dismiss every loss result. A TCP probe aimed at the active RTMPS port is more relevant than an ICMP-only test, but it remains a diagnostic probe rather than a measurement of every packet in the live stream.
Correlate route results with stream evidence
A network-path explanation becomes more plausible when repeated destination-correlated route degradation coincides with rising encoder network-dropped counters or connection errors and matching YouTube health warnings. Preserve the failure time, the route reports, the encoder’s relevant logs or counters, and YouTube’s health notices together. If the reports do not degrade during the symptom, investigate other causes before choosing another VPS based only on geography.

Check capacity separately from packet loss
A route can be stable while the VPS lacks sustained outbound capacity for the configured stream. YouTube advises choosing quality that suits the available connection, running a speed test, testing beforehand with representative movement and audio, and monitoring stream health. Compare the configured bitrate with the specific YouTube recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you use—not with an unrelated row. For example, YouTube lists recommended H.264 bitrates of 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60; those examples do not apply to every codec or setting. Check the maintained guidance for your exact combination: YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Assess capacity over the stream’s operating period rather than relying only on a short speed-test peak. The cited YouTube guidance provides encoder bitrate recommendations, not measurements of packet loss on Indian VPS routes.
