For gaming and calls, prioritize a microphone you can position near your mouth, an easy mute control, and a fit you can tolerate for long sessions. There is no single best choice for every console, phone, head, and listening preference.
Start with the devices you want to connect
Write down every device you plan to use: console, PC, phone, or tablet. Then check the compatibility information for the exact headset version and connection mode. A model name—or the word “wireless”—does not guarantee that every version works with every platform.
Do not assume ordinary Bluetooth headphones will carry game audio on a console. Turtle Beach’s July 2026 connection guide says standard Bluetooth is not supported for game audio on PS5 or Xbox. A wired 3.5 mm connection or a headset’s supported USB wireless mode may work, but confirm the specific headset and console combination first. Turtle Beach’s connection guide explains the distinction. Logitech likewise advises checking connection type and multi-device compatibility early; its guide says most Logitech G and ASTRO headsets connect to PS4 and PS5 by USB or 3.5 mm. See Logitech’s PlayStation headset guide.
Choose wired or wireless for your routine
| Connection | Best fit | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Wired 3.5 mm | A fixed desk or controller setup where you want to avoid charging the headset. | Your device needs a compatible jack, and the cable must reach comfortably. |
| Wireless 2.4 GHz | Gaming when you want to move around without a cable and the headset supports your platform. | Confirm the required dongle or connection mode and compatibility with the exact console or computer. |
| Bluetooth | Convenient connections to phones and other compatible mobile devices. | Do not assume it supports console game audio, or that Bluetooth and a gaming connection can run or switch together. |
Wired avoids headset battery charging, while wireless offers more freedom of movement but makes charging part of ownership. SoundGuys’ 2026 guide recommends considering 2.4 GHz for lower-latency gaming and Bluetooth for broader mobile-device convenience. Whether a headset can switch between these modes—or use them at the same time—is product-specific, not something to infer from “wireless.” SoundGuys’ wireless gaming headset guide covers these trade-offs.

Look for a practical microphone and mute control
For multiplayer chat as well as work or personal calls, look for a boom microphone that can sit close to your mouth and a physical mute control you can find quickly. SoundGuys says a boom mic positioned close to the mouth will typically deliver the best microphone quality; its guide is sponsored by HyperX, so treat its recommendations as guidance rather than a comparative independent test of budget headsets.
A flip-to-mute boom can be convenient when you need to silence yourself quickly. Logitech describes that feature on the ASTRO A10, along with a padded headband and earcups. That is a product example, not evidence that it outperforms other headsets. Logitech’s guide describes the ASTRO A10.
Judge comfort by fit, not one specification
Comfort varies by head and listening habits, so consider several details together: ear-cup depth and size, headband adjustment, clamping pressure, weight, and whether the cups rotate. Pad material also involves trade-offs. SoundGuys notes that leatherette can help seal out noise but may retain heat, while microfiber is more breathable.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCompare wireless battery claims carefully
If you prefer not to charge often, SoundGuys recommends considering a stated battery life of at least 50 hours. That is its buying recommendation, not a required minimum or a guarantee of actual runtime. Check the mode and conditions attached to any battery rating: Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz, simultaneous connections, and RGB lighting can affect how long a charge lasts.

For example, SoundGuys reports a manufacturer rating of up to 250 hours for the HyperX Cloud Alpha 2 Wireless on 2.4 GHz. The guide notes that using Bluetooth at the same time and RGB lighting may reduce runtime. Treat that as a product- and mode-specific claim, not an independent comparison or a prediction for other headsets. Read the SoundGuys guide and its battery-life context.

Quick Recap
A quick buying checklist
- Confirm the exact headset version works with your console, computer, and phone through the connection you intend to use.
- Choose wired for a suitable fixed setup without headset charging, or wireless if mobility is worth checking compatibility and managing battery life.
- For gaming and calls, look for a close-positioned boom and a mute control that is easy to use.
- Check fit, adjustability, pad material, and heat; use a return option if comfort is uncertain.
- For wireless models, compare battery ratings only after checking the connection mode and conditions behind them.
