Then size its outbound transfer for the stream’s bitrate, confirm the plan’s regional billing and CPU terms, and test the whole path to YouTube before relying on it. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations do not translate into a universal vCPU requirement.
Start with the job the server must do
A cloud server for continuous YouTube Live streaming can have very different workloads. A relay that forwards an already encoded feed mainly needs a stable network path and sufficient transfer allowance. A server creating scenes, compositing sources, or re-encoding video also needs enough sustained compute for that specific workload.
Write down the workload
- Identify the source: a static image, a playlist, a composited scene, or a live source.
- Decide whether the server will encode video or only forward an encoded feed.
- Choose the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance.
- Record the server’s region, source location, and expected stream duration.
Do not select a CPU or GPU solely from the target bitrate. If the server encodes, test the actual content and encoding profile on the intended resource class, and confirm that it can sustain the workload over time before committing to a long plan.
Estimate monthly transfer before comparing plans
For one constant-bitrate feed, estimate monthly decimal gigabytes as:

bitrate in Mbps × 3,600 × 24 × 30 ÷ 8,000
| Constant video bitrate | Video transfer over 30 days |
|---|---|
| 6 Mbps | 1,944 GB, about 1.94 TB |
| 10 Mbps | 3,240 GB, about 3.24 TB |
These are calculations from the bitrate and a 30-day month, not provider statistics. They exclude protocol overhead and other traffic. Add a margin for overhead, source downloads, updates, monitoring, and any other server use. Check how the provider defines billable transfer: allowances and billing rules differ, and a plan’s allowance may not map directly to this decimal estimate.
Compare cloud server plans on the terms that affect a continuous stream
Compare plans in the region you intend to use. The relevant questions are not only the advertised monthly price, but what resources are included, how transfer is counted, what excess traffic costs, and whether the plan’s availability terms suit your recovery needs.

| Provider example | Transfer terms documented | Compute and plan considerations | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Lightsail | Inbound and outbound traffic count toward the allowance; excess outbound transfer is chargeable. | The pricing page lists virtual-server bundles with memory, vCPU, disk, and transfer. At the time described on the page, example Linux/Unix general-purpose plans ranged from $5/month with 1 TB transfer to $24/month with 4 TB transfer. | Confirm current regional price, allowance, and billing rules. Those displayed examples are volatile and are not a server-size recommendation. |
| DigitalOcean Droplets | Each plan includes an amount of outbound transfer; additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB. Inbound transfer is free, and allowances pool at team level. | The included quota depends on the applicable plan. DigitalOcean documents CPU and GPU Droplets as separate catalogs. | Check the quota and team-level allowance that apply to your plan, and calculate excess transfer using the provider’s GiB billing basis. |
| Hetzner Cloud | Traffic allowances vary by product and location. | Documentation distinguishes shared-resource and dedicated-resource server classes. Its Cloud Server SLA describes a conditional 99.9% monthly availability objective, subject to its definitions and exclusions. | Verify the current allowance and SLA for the intended region and product. An availability objective does not ensure that a stream cannot drop. |
These provider examples illustrate plan dimensions, not a complete market survey or a performance ranking. No provider’s plan terms establish that an instance can sustain a particular encode. Compare the complete recurring cost, including relevant IP or storage charges, and check the current regional terms directly before purchasing.
Set the YouTube ingest profile deliberately
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe frequency of two seconds; it says not to exceed four seconds. The recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Use the current table for your chosen profile rather than assuming one bitrate applies to every codec or resolution.

- Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure extension to RTMP.
- Rate control: Set CBR as recommended by YouTube.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Test content: Test representative movement and audio. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test and testing before starting the live stream.
- Health: Monitor stream health after going live, rather than relying only on the server’s nominal network or CPU specification.
YouTube supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 in its current guidance. HLS can suit certain workflows, including HDR or codecs unsupported over RTMP, but it has higher latency and requires compliant segments, a rolling playlist, and HTTPS behavior. Choose it only when the workflow’s requirements justify those conditions; otherwise follow YouTube’s RTMPS recommendation.
Plan for failures, not just nominal availability
A cloud provider’s availability terms cover only what their definitions specify. For example, Hetzner’s 99.9% monthly availability objective is conditional and does not guarantee that a broadcast will never drop. The encoder process, source, network path, and recovery configuration are also part of the live chain.

- Run a test stream using the actual source, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and check its stream health indicators.
- Monitor both the host process and the connection to YouTube.
- Decide how the encoder should restart after a process failure and how the feed should recover after a connection interruption.
- Protect the YouTube stream key as a credential. Limit who can access it, and do not expose it in public logs or scripts.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a 24/7 feed as a scenario where a channel may also create a separate video for an interview occurring during the broadcast. If you need that sort of schedule or separate broadcast behavior, account for it in your YouTube workflow rather than assuming the server alone handles it.
