Rockstar’s official page labels PS5 “Plays Best On,” and PlayStation says the game will use PS5 immersive features. Those are official PS5 positioning statements—not a published performance comparison with Xbox. If you already own one of these console families, that is a practical place to start; otherwise, compare the current local console price and edition details before choosing.
Which consoles are currently listed for GTA VI?
Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms and gives November 19, 2026 as the coming date. Xbox’s official listing also names Xbox Series X|S and repeats that date. These listings do not name PS4, Xbox One, or PC; they describe the platforms currently announced by those sources, not every possible future plan.
Check the official listings again near release, since dates and platform plans can change.
What does “Plays Best On PS5” mean?
Rockstar’s GTA VI page places the label “Plays Best On” above “PlayStation 5.” In a June 24, 2026 PlayStation Blog post, PlayStation says the game will take advantage of PS5 immersive features to deliver a single-player experience. This is platform-holder positioning, attributed to the partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rockstar Games; it is not independent comparative testing.

The cited official pages do not give a PS5-versus-Xbox Series X|S benchmark or specify GTA VI frame rate, resolution, image quality, or loading times. The PS5 label therefore does not establish a measurable technical advantage over either Xbox model.
How should you choose between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S?
Start with the console you already own
Both console families are officially listed for GTA VI. If you already own a PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S, staying with that system may be the simplest choice. That is ecosystem and budget guidance—not a claim that GTA VI runs better on a console you own.

If you are buying a console, compare the exact models and local prices
Check current prices and bundles for the specific PS5 or Xbox Series model you are considering in your region. The official GTA VI platform listings do not establish a console-price winner, and they do not provide a head-to-head technical comparison of PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. Do not assume a particular model’s GTA VI frame rate or resolution from its name alone.
Factor in the game’s price and any launch offer
Take-Two Interactive’s June 2026 announcement gives a US launch price of $79.99 for GTA VI; that is a US price reference, not universal local pricing. The announcement says pre-orders or purchases made before November 20, 2026 include the Vintage Vice City Pack, while digital pre-orders include a free month of GTA+. These are specific offers and conditions in that announcement, not a promise that they will be available indefinitely or in every region. Check the applicable local store listing before buying.

Which GTA VI edition and purchase format should you choose?
Rockstar Support’s platforms, editions, and versions information, last updated August 18, 2026, describes Standard and Ultimate Editions:
- Standard Edition: includes the game.
- Ultimate Edition: includes the game and additional content.
- Ultimate Edition Upgrade: Standard Edition owners can buy the upgrade after redeeming the code.
Rockstar says the physical version contains a download code for the digital download. It is not a disc, so choose the format with that detail in mind and check the retailer’s listing for the exact item being sold.

What the official information does—and does not—settle
The announced date, platforms, PS5 positioning, edition descriptions, and stated US game price can help narrow the decision. They do not settle which console delivers better GTA VI performance, which console currently costs less in your area, or what technical settings the game will use. No accessory is identified in these cited sources as necessary to play GTA VI.
