If you want the strongest portability described by the platforms covered here, look for an explicitly DRM-free PDF download; syncing and offline reading inside an app remain tied to that service.
What does it mean to keep a digital comic?
Before comparing platforms, decide what you need to keep. An account library lets you revisit comics while your account and the service provide access. Device syncing makes that library available on supported devices. Offline reading usually means the app stores a temporary or managed copy for use without an internet connection. A separate downloadable file is different: it can be stored outside the reading app, subject to the file’s terms.
- Account access: the comic appears in a service-linked library.
- Offline app access: the app can open a downloaded comic without a connection.
- Independent file: the platform explicitly provides a file, such as a PDF, that you can download and store separately.
Do not treat syncing or offline access as proof that a comic is exportable, transferable, or permanently usable outside its platform.
How to compare platforms before you buy
- Identify the access model. Check whether you are buying an individual issue or volume, reading through a subscription, or using both options. A subscription reading benefit is not the same as an individual purchase.
- Find the retention mechanism. Look for precise language: account library, offline reading in the app, or a downloadable file. If keeping a separate copy matters, require the platform to state the file format and whether it is DRM-free.
- Check transferability directly. Device syncing does not mean purchases move between services. Look for an explicit statement that a library can be transferred; otherwise, assume it stays with the service where it was acquired.
- Verify the exact comic and territory. Check the series, volume, and issue on its own purchase page, as well as local availability and supported devices. A platform’s broad catalog claim does not establish that a particular comic can be bought or downloaded in your region.
- Read the file and subscription terms. Confirm which titles are eligible for downloads, whether offline access requires a subscription, and what the service says about continued file access. Do not infer these details from a general platform description.
What the major platform examples establish
Comixology and DC Universe Infinite are separate libraries
The DC Universe Infinite Help Center says Comixology is a different service and that purchases made there “will not be reflected in your DC UNIVERSE INFINITE account.” DC’s help page on Comixology purchases does not promise a transfer between the two libraries.

DC’s 2020 ReadDC.com FAQ described access to a ReadDC library through the DC Comics app and Comixology using the same account. That was guidance for a service transition at the time; it should not be read as a guarantee of current transfer options between platforms.
Marvel supports app syncing and offline reading, not an export claim
Marvel says purchased and redeemed comics sync across compatible devices when readers use a Marvel account, and that comics can be downloaded for offline reading in the Marvel Unlimited app. See Marvel’s pages on syncing purchases across devices and offline comic downloads. These describe app-based access; they do not say customers receive exportable comic files.

DC Universe Infinite supports offline reading in its apps
DC announced downloads for offline reading on iOS and Android for DC Universe Infinite subscribers. Its 2025 update announcement supports offline app reading, not a claim that subscribers can export independent files.
GlobalComix distinguishes reading licenses from DRM-free PDFs
GlobalComix separates Collection Unlocks, which it describes as a license to read, from DRM-free PDF downloads, which it says provide permanent access to a downloadable PDF. Its FAQ also says GlobalComix Gold is required to download Collection Unlocks for offline reading. These are distinct offers: a reading license or offline app option should not be mistaken for a DRM-free file. DRM-free describes the file’s access restrictions; it does not transfer copyright or permit redistribution.

How to weigh catalog size against retention
Catalog breadth matters only after you confirm the comic you want is available under the access terms you need. DC Universe Infinite’s Help Center currently describes its catalog as 35,000+ Ultra titles and 30,000+ Standard titles, and says Ultra titles arrive 30 days after print. Those are DC’s service-reported figures, not independent market measurements, and may change. Check DC’s available-content page for the current description; neither the counts nor the timing establish availability of a particular issue in every territory.
Which platform approach fits your priority?
- You want a comic available on several devices: prioritize account syncing and confirm compatible devices. This offers convenience, not portability to another service.
- You want to read away from a connection: check that the specific app supports offline reading and whether the title or subscription qualifies.
- You want a copy stored independently: choose a title explicitly offered as a downloadable file, and verify its format and terms before paying. Among the examples above, GlobalComix explicitly describes DRM-free PDF downloads.
- You already own comics in another library: do not assume a new platform will import them. Check for a specific transfer policy; DC, for example, says Comixology purchases do not appear in a DC Universe Infinite account.
What to confirm on the comic’s purchase page
Platform-wide labels can hide title-level and regional differences. Before checkout, confirm the exact issue or volume, the country where you are buying it, the supported app or device, and the delivery method. If a separate file is essential, look for an explicit download format and DRM status rather than relying on terms such as “purchase,” “library,” or “offline.”
