Start with routes and targets, check whether the opportunity is likely to last, then weigh matchup, scoring rules and what your roster needs. That approach helps distinguish a useful pickup from a touchdown-driven one-week spike.
What to check before claiming a receiver
1. Confirm the player is actually involved
Begin with routes run and route participation: a receiver cannot earn targets on routes he does not run. Then compare snaps, targets and target share. Target share shows how much of his team’s passing attention he is receiving, which makes it more useful than a raw target total when comparing players on different offenses.
Usage dashboards can bring these measures together. PFF’s Fantasy Football Usage & Production Report lists snap counts, routes, targets per route run, red-zone use, alignment, air yards per target, situational splits and fantasy points.
2. Separate opportunity from efficiency
Routes, targets and target share describe opportunity. Yards per route run and targets per route run add context about what happens when a player is involved, but a strong efficiency figure over a small sample is not proof of a lasting breakout. Give more weight to efficiency supported by sustained route volume.

For example, NFL.com’s Week 4, 2026 waiver article reported Kalif Raymond at a 23.1% target share and 2.8 yards per route run, with 19 catches and 214 receiving yards through three weeks. The article described his target share as second on the team. These are that article’s week-specific figures, not thresholds that predict success for other players.
3. Find out why the role changed
Check for an injured teammate, a depth-chart promotion, more routes or a change in alignment. Then ask whether the opening is likely to remain after the absent player returns. NFL.com’s Week 4, 2026 examples tied Mack Hollins’ team-high 19.5% target share and 2.3 yards per route run to A.J. Brown’s absence. That context makes Hollins’ opportunity relevant, but also raises the question of how his role may change when Brown is available.

The same article reported that Keenan Allen received a season-high nine targets while Alec Pierce was on injured reserve. Injury-created opportunity can make a player useful now without establishing a permanent role.
Judge whether the production is likely to continue
Look beyond the touchdown
A long score can create a tempting fantasy total without a dependable weekly role. Check whether the player also ran a meaningful number of routes and earned targets. If the case rests mostly on a deep catch or one spike week, treat him as a volatile stash rather than a safe starter.

Air-yards share, deep-route usage and red-zone involvement can help explain a player’s ceiling. NFL.com’s Week 4, 2026 article reported a 31.2% air-yards share and 2.3 yards per route run for Dontayvion Wicks. Its Week 3 article ranked Wicks seventh in yards per route run among receivers with at least 50 routes, at 2.8. The different week and sample conditions matter; neither figure alone establishes a universal breakout rule.
Estimate the time horizon
Decide whether you need a receiver to start this week or can hold a developing role on your bench. A player seeing regular targets may offer a more dependable short-term option; a lower-volume receiver with deep targets or explosive-play potential may be a higher-variance stash. NFL.com’s Week 4 article also reported Malik Washington running 34 routes and receiving 10 targets in Week 3, a useful example of checking workload alongside a player’s fantasy output.

Adjust for matchup and your league
Use coverage as a tiebreaker
Look at the upcoming opponent and where the receiver lines up. A strong outside corner may not follow a receiver into the slot, while a shadow corner can reduce a wide receiver’s immediate outlook. NFL.com’s Week 2, 2026 start/sit analysis discusses both slot alignment and shadow coverage. Matchup should modify your expectation for a player with a real role; it cannot create opportunity for a receiver who rarely runs routes or earns targets.
Match the player to your scoring and roster
- PPR: Stable catch volume can be more useful than relying on a touchdown.
- Standard scoring: Downfield opportunities and touchdown involvement may carry more weight.
- Need a starter: Favor a plausible path to regular targets and near-term routes.
- Can stash: Consider a player whose role may grow, especially if an injury or depth-chart change has opened routes.
Also consider starting slots, bench depth and the receiver you would otherwise use. A pickup is valuable only in relation to your realistic alternatives.

Decide whether to use a claim or FAAB
Compare the available receiver with the best replacement on your roster, then account for your league’s waiver rules and budget. In a shallow league, prioritize a player with a credible path to weekly targets. In a deeper league, a role change or injury-created opening may justify a bench stash. Do not make a large bid solely because a receiver scored once: the cited weekly analyses offer decision aids, not a universal FAAB formula or guaranteed statistical cutoff.
- Verify availability: Check your league’s current waiver pool, waiver ownership and claim deadline.
- Check status: Review the latest injury report and depth chart, including the status of teammates whose absence created the opportunity.
- Compare roles: Use routes, targets, target share and any meaningful change in playing time before comparing recent fantasy totals.
- Choose the fit: Decide whether you need a safer near-term option or can afford a higher-variance stash, then set a claim or bid in line with your roster and remaining budget.
How to use weekly player examples
Player recommendations and usage numbers are snapshots, not permanent rankings. NFL.com’s Week 3 and Week 4, 2026 articles show how target share, route volume, efficiency, injury context and volatility can inform a decision; their availability and figures may change by the next waiver cycle. Recheck current status and usage before submitting a claim. No single target-share or yards-per-route-run number guarantees that a pickup will succeed.
For a close call, compare the players on the factors that change the decision:
| Factor | What to compare | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Opportunity | Routes, targets, target share and snaps | Whether the receiver has a real path to catches and fantasy points. |
| Role durability | Injuries, depth chart and expected role after teammates return | Whether the opportunity is temporary or could persist. |
| Efficiency | Targets per route and yards per route, alongside sample size | How productive the player has been when involved, without confusing a small sample for a stable trend. |
| Ceiling | Air yards, red-zone use and big-play profile | Whether the player has a plausible path to a high-scoring week—and how volatile that path may be. |
| Weekly context | Opponent, likely coverage and alignment | How the matchup may shift this week’s expectation. |
| Roster fit | Scoring format, lineup need, bench depth and waiver cost | Whether the player is a better use of your spot or budget than the alternatives. |
For matchup-specific context, NFL.com’s Week 2, 2026 start/sit analysis discusses slot routes and shadow coverage. Those examples illustrate how alignment can affect a weekly outlook; use current coverage and player information for the week you are deciding.
