Choose the engine that can ship your specific game on its required platforms, within your team’s skills and budget—not the one with the broadest reputation. Start by ruling out licensing or platform barriers, then test the remaining candidates by building a small slice of your game’s riskiest feature and content workflow. There is no universal best engine or generally established performance winner.
Start with the game you intend to ship
Before comparing engine names, write down the requirements that would change your choice. Keep the list concrete: a side-on 2D action game, for example, has different visual and workflow demands from a high-fidelity 3D game; a required console release can impose a hard access constraint regardless of how well an engine suits the game itself.
- Game shape and visuals: 2D or 3D, camera perspective, visual target, and any essential rendering or physics needs.
- Features: the mechanics and production systems the game cannot ship without, such as multiplayer, save/load, or a particular asset pipeline.
- Platforms: desktop, web, mobile, VR or spatial platforms, and consoles. Check the exact target, engine version, SDK access, and approval requirements.
- Team fit: languages the team knows, its debugging and collaboration habits, and the time available to learn.
- Budget and terms: subscription eligibility, per-seat costs, royalty triggers, and any platform-related requirements.
Eliminate candidates that cannot reach a required platform on acceptable terms before investing time in a large prototype.
Compare the engines against your actual needs
| Decision area | What to investigate | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Game and visual fit | Test the rendering, physics, import, and content workflows your project needs for its 2D or 3D scope. | Godot’s FAQ describes 2D and 3D workflows and asset importing; Epic positions Unreal for indie production and offers a digital asset ecosystem. These sources do not establish that either is best for a particular genre. Godot FAQ; Epic’s indie games overview. |
| Platform access | Confirm support for each required target, the relevant SDK path, and any approvals. | Unity specifies requirements for closed-console builds; Epic says console development requires platform-holder approval for SDK access. Check current rules for the specific target. Unity Personal; Unreal licensing. |
| Language and workflow | Build with the language and collaboration approach your team will use, rather than choosing by reputation alone. | Godot’s FAQ recommends considering familiarity, platform support, and language features. Official resources do not prove comparative ease or community responsiveness. Godot FAQ. |
| Learning resources | Try the official documentation and tutorials for the tasks your project actually requires. | Godot and Unity provide official documentation or learning resources, but their existence does not establish which engine is easier to learn. Godot FAQ; Unity Personal. |
| Licensing and cost | Check who must pay, when a fee or royalty applies, how revenue is defined, and whether platform requirements add costs or gates. | Godot is MIT-licensed; Unity has plan eligibility and published subscription terms; Unreal has conditional royalty terms. Review the applicable official terms before committing or shipping. Godot license; Unity pricing updates; Unreal licensing. |
| Prototype risk | Measure how your team handles the hardest mechanic, representative assets, iteration, and any relevant performance target. | The available sources do not provide a comparable benchmark for general speed, performance, or learning time. Your own project slice is more useful than an unsupported universal ranking. |

Godot
Godot is free and open-source under the MIT license, and its official FAQ says it may be used for personal, nonprofit, or commercial purposes. If you redistribute copies, observe the MIT license conditions. Consult the official documentation for language, export, and workflow guidance, and verify support for your exact target and version—especially for consoles and third-party routes. Unity
Unity Personal is free for eligible users below $200,000 in revenue and funding. Unity’s published 2026 terms list Unity Pro at $2,310 per seat per year prepaid or $210 per seat per month; Unity announced a 5% Pro and Enterprise price increase effective January 12, 2026. The pricing page says Pro is required for businesses over $200,000 in revenue or funding. Confirm current eligibility and regional costs directly with Unity. Unity Personal; Unity pricing updates.
Closed-console builds require an active Unity Pro subscription or a platform-holder Preferred Platform license key, as well as platform-holder approval. Treat console access as a separate requirement to verify, not as an automatic consequence of choosing Unity. Unity Personal.

Unreal Engine
Epic describes a 5% royalty on qualifying lifetime gross revenue above $1 million directly attributable to the Unreal product. The applicable license, product category, and exceptions affect how the terms apply, so check them directly before budgeting. Console development also requires platform-holder approval to access SDKs. Unreal licensing options; Epic’s indie games overview.

The 2025 Game Developers Conference State of the Game Industry report found Unity and Unreal tied at 32% each as the most-used engines among its survey respondents. That is a survey result—not a measurement of all released games, indie-only adoption, ease of use, or suitability for your project. Popularity can indicate that many developers use an engine, but it cannot decide whether its workflow and terms fit your game. 2025 GDC State of the Game Industry report.

Prototype the riskiest part before committing
- Write a one-page requirements list. Include genre and camera, 2D or 3D scope, visual target, must-have features, platforms, team experience, language needs, budget, middleware, and console requirements.
- Shortlist only engines that clear the hard constraints. Confirm target support and licensing eligibility using the official terms for your intended release and region.
- Build the same small representative slice in each serious candidate. Include the riskiest mechanic and a representative part of the art or asset pipeline; add save/load, multiplayer, or a performance target if one could derail production.
- Record what happens in your workflow. Compare iteration friction, implementation effort, debugging, and output against the written requirements. Do not treat a quick first scene as proof that a full production pipeline will suit the team.
- Choose on evidence from that slice. If no candidate clears the platform or licensing requirements, revisit the constraints rather than forcing a poor fit. Recheck official terms if they change before release.
