Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose a game subscription by checking whether it includes the specific games you want, on the device you use, at a price that fits how long you plan to play. Start with a shortlist—not the advertised library size—then verify each title in the live catalog for your region and intended plan. A catalog game is usually access, not ownership: games can leave, and access may end when membership expires.
Start with your games, platform and play schedule
- Write down the games you actually expect to play. Include the titles you want now, not every game that sounds interesting. Check each one in the provider’s live catalog and note its plan, platform and whether it is available to download or stream.
- Check the device you will use. A service may support several platforms, but a particular game or feature may not be available on all of them. Separate console or PC downloads from cloud streaming, and confirm that streaming is supported in your region and on your device.
- Identify how access works. A game might be part of a changing catalog, a monthly claim, a classics library, a time-limited trial or a publisher-specific collection. Check whether you retain access only while subscribed and whether the title has an announced departure date.
- Choose the shortest useful subscription period. Compare the cost with the time you realistically need. An annual plan can be cheaper over a full year, but a single month may suit someone subscribing just long enough to finish one game.
Repeat the catalog check before paying: availability and plan benefits can change. Xbox says its game titles, features and availability vary over time, by region, plan and platform. Sony also warns that games can leave its Game Catalogue and Classics Catalogue, with end dates publicized ahead of time.

Xbox Game Pass: a candidate for Xbox, PC or supported cloud play
Microsoft’s US comparison lists Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, Essential and PC Game Pass, with benefits that differ by tier. Depending on the plan, benefits include a changing game library, selected day-one releases, EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, cloud gaming on supported devices and online console multiplayer. Microsoft lists supported use across Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, handhelds, mobile devices, TVs, Meta VR headsets and browsers, but support and eligibility vary by plan and device. Check Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass plan comparison and live library for the exact combination you need.
Do not assume every new release arrives on day one. Microsoft describes that benefit as applying to selected games and excluding Call of Duty titles. Cloud gaming requires a Game Pass subscription and a supported device and region; some streamable games are sold separately. Xbox also says free-to-play multiplayer is open to every Xbox player, so do not pay for a tier solely on the assumption that it is required for those games.

PlayStation Plus: choose a tier for its catalog or specific extras
Sony’s US page lists Essential, Extra and Premium. Essential includes monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage, Share Play and selected content. Extra adds the Game Catalogue, a rotating selection of hundreds of games. Premium adds the Classics Catalogue, game trials and cloud streaming, alongside lower-tier benefits; Ubisoft+ Classics is listed with Extra and Premium. Check Sony’s PlayStation Plus membership page for current catalog and tier details.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
| Tier | Monthly | Three months | 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $10.99 | $27.99 | $79.99 |
| Extra | $16.99 | $43.99 | $134.99 |
| Premium | $19.99 | $54.99 | $159.99 |
These are live US storefront prices, not universal rates; check your local storefront and billing terms. Sony says most purchased games require PS Plus for online multiplayer, while most free-to-play games—including Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone—do not. Premium cloud streaming requires a minimum 5 Mbps connection; Sony lists 15 Mbps for 1080p. From January 2026, Sony says PS4 games will be added only intermittently. Consider Extra or Premium when the games or features unique to those tiers matter to you, rather than upgrading for a larger tier name alone.

Nintendo of America’s US page, accessed October 7, 2026, displayed these annual prices:
| Membership | Individual, per year | Family, per year |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online | $19.99 | $34.99 |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | $49.99 | $79.99 |
The family membership covers up to eight accounts. Nintendo notes that online functions and some features are limited to compatible games and are not available in every country. Expansion Pack DLC requires the full game, and some DLC access depends on membership. This service is most relevant if you play on Switch or Switch 2 and want its online features, retro libraries or included selected add-ons; judge it by those specific games and benefits, not by comparison with a broad third-party catalog.

EA Play: for a shortlist concentrated in EA games
EA Play centers on EA’s Play List, member rewards, a 10% discount on EA digital purchases and trials of selected new releases for up to 10 hours. EA’s US page lists EA Play at $5.99 per month or $39.99 per year, and EA Play Pro at $16.99 per month or $119.99 per year. EA says membership applies to one platform. Pro is described as including the best editions of selected latest titles and early access to selected new releases; confirm current platform terms and eligibility on EA’s EA Play membership page. This is a more relevant comparison when the games you want are concentrated in EA franchises than when you need a general platform-wide catalog.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide between two plausible subscriptions
Compare the services in this order. A service that wins on a benefit you will not use may still be the worse fit.
- Game overlap: Count the titles on your shortlist that are currently available, and record the tier required. Check for announced departures.
- Platform and access mode: Confirm the title works on your actual console, PC or other device. Verify download versus streaming support separately.
- Access rules: Distinguish catalog access from a monthly claim, trial, classics library or add-on. Check what happens when membership ends or a game leaves.
- Benefits you will use: Consider online multiplayer, cloud play, trials, retro games, DLC and publisher rewards. Avoid paying more for extras that do not matter to your play.
- Cost for your likely subscription period: Compare the price for the time you expect to stay subscribed, and check recurring billing, taxes, promotions and regional storefront prices. A yearly rate is useful only if you expect to use the service for much of the year.
Check whether you need a subscription for online play
Do not assume every online game requires a paid membership. The rule can depend on the platform and game: Sony says most purchased games require PS Plus for online multiplayer, but most free-to-play titles do not; Xbox lists free-to-play multiplayer as open to every Xbox player. For the specific game you play, check its platform requirements and the subscription provider’s current terms before upgrading.
