For richly colored fantasy games, choose a monitor by balancing HDR quality, color performance, resolution, room lighting, and the frame rate your PC or console can actually deliver. OLED and QD-OLED are compelling in darker rooms, Mini-LED can work better in brighter rooms, and fast IPS is a versatile option. Those are starting points, not guarantees: compare the exact model’s specifications and independent measurements rather than relying on a panel label or an “HDR” badge.
Start with the games, room, and system
Story-driven worlds reward sharp scenery, deep contrast, and colors that remain convincing across bright and dark scenes. Competitive games may place more value on high refresh rates and motion clarity. Decide which experience matters most, then check that your room and hardware suit the display.
- Games: Consider whether you mainly play cinematic, open-world adventures or fast competitive titles.
- Room: Ambient light and reflections can affect which panel looks best. OLED is generally strongest in dark rooms; Mini-LED can be a better fit for bright rooms. These are broad tendencies, so review the individual model. RTINGS’ monitor guidance discusses these trade-offs.
- Hardware: Your GPU or console, game settings, and display connection determine which resolution, refresh rate, and HDR mode you can use together.
- Desk: Screen size, viewing distance, desk depth, stand adjustments, and mounting compatibility all affect day-to-day comfort.
Choose a panel for your lighting and priorities
OLED and QD-OLED for dark-room immersion
OLED can be a strong choice for cinematic games in a dim room. RTINGS broadly favors OLED for dark-room picture quality and highlights QD-OLED for vivid color, while noting that some WOLED and Mini-LED displays also perform well. The panel category alone does not establish a particular model’s color accuracy, HDR impact, or motion behavior.
Mini-LED for brighter rooms
Mini-LED can suit a brighter room better than OLED, according to RTINGS’ general comparison. Check the model’s measured brightness, local-dimming behavior, and reflections; the name does not guarantee a specific result.

Fast IPS for versatility
IPS can balance fast gameplay with everyday desktop use. LG presents it as a versatile option, while positioning OLED as appealing for immersive single-player games. Compare reviews of the exact display for response behavior, overshoot, contrast, and color rather than treating the panel type as a complete specification.
Assess color beyond a wide-gamut claim
Color gamut describes the range of colors a display can reproduce. It does not by itself tell you whether those colors are accurate or stay vivid at different brightness levels; HDR color volume addresses how color holds up across brightness. Look for published measurements of gamut coverage, SDR accuracy, and HDR color volume where available. A large DCI-P3 figure is useful context, not a complete verdict on image quality. RTINGS explains color gamut and related display measures.

Judge HDR by the display, not the input badge
HDR10 support means a monitor can accept an HDR signal; it does not prove that the screen can show HDR convincingly. HDR quality depends on factors including peak brightness, black levels, color depth, gamut, and local dimming. The game also needs native HDR support to benefit from an HDR display. Intel recommends checking VESA DisplayHDR certification alongside the underlying specifications. Intel’s HDR gaming guide outlines what to inspect.
Intel’s buying guide describes these requirements for two VESA tiers: DisplayHDR 400 can require 400-nit peak brightness and 95% sRGB, but does not require backlight local dimming; DisplayHDR 600 requires 600 nits, 90% DCI-P3, 10-bit color depth, and some form of local dimming. These are tier requirements in Intel’s guide, not a universal ranking of what every gamer should buy. Intel’s HDR buying guide provides the tier details.

Match resolution to detail and GPU performance
Higher resolution can make landscapes, fine textures, and interface text look sharper, but it also increases rendering demands. 4K means 3,840 × 2,160 pixels—four times the pixel count of Full HD. LG considers 4K a good match for story-driven, open-world, or HDR-heavy games when the system can sustain the desired frame rate. It may be poor value with an older or mid-range GPU, or if competitive frame rate takes priority. LG’s 4K gaming monitor guide discusses the trade-off.
Consider resolution alongside screen size and how far you sit from the monitor. Before buying, check whether your GPU or console can run your preferred games at the chosen resolution and settings while maintaining a frame rate you find acceptable. The monitor’s connection and input bandwidth must also support the resolution and refresh-rate combination you intend to use.

Set a realistic refresh-rate target
A high refresh rate can make motion smoother, but it only helps when the source can supply enough frames and the connection can carry the required signal. Consoles also have their own maximum refresh-rate limits, so a very high-refresh-rate PC monitor may offer little benefit for console play. Check support for the exact console, resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode, and input you plan to use. RTINGS notes that variable refresh rate (VRR) can reduce tearing as frame rates vary, though some monitors show distracting VRR flicker, especially in dark scenes. RTINGS’ refresh-rate guide explains these constraints.
Do not judge motion by one advertised response-time number. Pixel response, overshoot, and refresh rate all contribute to motion clarity; seek model-specific measurements or reviews that assess the combined behavior.

Check the complete signal path and physical fit
The monitor’s capabilities matter only if the device and connection can deliver the mode you want. Check the GPU or console output, cable and port bandwidth, monitor input, and the resolution/refresh/HDR combination supported by that input. Also confirm adaptive-sync compatibility for your setup. The exact model manual or specification sheet is more useful than a broad claim about HDMI or DisplayPort alone.
Measure the desk and viewing distance before settling on screen size. If you plan to use an arm, verify the monitor’s VESA mounting pattern and weight, as well as the arm’s capacity. Dell’s buying guidance covers practical monitor-selection considerations such as workspace fit. Dell’s monitor buying guide.
Use model specifications as a checklist, not an endorsement
Philips’ regional specification sheet for model 27M2N8500/69 lists a QD-OLED panel, maximum resolution of 2560 × 1440 at 360 Hz, typical 98.5% DCI-P3 coverage, 0.03 ms gray-to-gray response time, VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification, and two HDMI 2.1 inputs. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results; Philips notes that details may vary by country and region. Verify the local model before purchase. Philips’ specification sheet is a useful example of the details to check, not a recommendation of that model.
