Choose the platform that runs the open-world games you actually want, fits your display and performance goals, and stays within your total budget. A console gives you a standardized hardware target; a gaming PC lets you choose components and adjust settings, but asks more of you when comparing parts and configuring games. Check each title’s official platform list and requirements before buying—one game’s specifications are not a universal recommendation.
Should you buy a gaming PC or console for open-world games?
Start with a short list of games, not a platform label. Confirm that every must-play title is available on the platform and, for a console, on the exact generation you intend to buy. For example, the official New World: Aeternum support page lists PC (Steam), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. That listing applies to this game; it does not establish availability for other open-world titles. The page also notes that PC specifications may continue to evolve.
- Choose a console if you want a fixed, standardized setup and prefer not to compare individual components or tune graphics settings.
- Choose a PC if you value component and settings choices and are comfortable checking whether a particular configuration meets a game’s requirements.
- Either can fit if your priority games support both and your intended display and budget work for the specific option you choose.
These are practical differences in flexibility and setup, not a measured claim that one platform is faster or better value. The available evidence does not establish a current regional price comparison or a best-value PC build.
What PC specs do you need for open-world games?
There is no single spec list that guarantees a good experience across open-world games. Compare the actual CPU, graphics card (GPU), memory, operating system, and storage in a proposed PC with the official requirements for each game. Then match the requirement tier to the resolution, frame rate, and graphics settings you want. “Gaming PC” by itself does not identify a performance level.

Use a game’s performance targets as anchors
The official God of War Ragnarök PC page gives game-specific examples. Its minimum tier targets average 1080p at 30 fps on low settings and lists an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD RX 5500 XT, an Intel i5-4670K or AMD Ryzen 3 1200, 8 GB RAM, Windows 10 64-bit, and a 190 GB SSD. Its recommended tier targets average 1080p at 60 fps on medium settings and lists an NVIDIA RTX 2060 Super or AMD RX 5700, an Intel Core i5-8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, and 16 GB RAM.
Those figures describe the named game and its stated targets; they should not be treated as a universal open-world PC specification. In particular, a component listed for minimum settings is not evidence that it will deliver a higher resolution, frame rate, or graphics preset.

Expect multiple requirement tiers
The Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition PC announcement sets out minimum, recommended, high, and very high tiers, with different processors by tier. Its graphics presets are intended to scale across a range of hardware. This is why comparing a whole configuration to the appropriate tier is more useful than buying one prominent component—such as a powerful GPU—without checking the rest.
Balance the whole configuration
Compare the GPU and CPU together with memory, storage, operating system, and your intended display target. As general manufacturer guidance rather than a guarantee for any particular game, HP’s 2026 gaming PC guide recommends at least 16 GB DDR5 RAM, a well-matched CPU and GPU, and a fast NVMe SSD; it suggests a 1 TB NVMe SSD for a larger library. Check the chosen game’s own requirements before treating any of those suggestions as sufficient.

How should resolution, frame rate, and settings affect the choice?
Decide what you want from the screen before comparing hardware. Higher resolution, smoother frame rates, and more demanding graphics settings are different targets; a game’s published performance tiers help show what a listed configuration is intended to achieve. For instance, God of War Ragnarök’s cited minimum and recommended targets differ in both frame rate and settings, so “meets minimum” does not mean “runs at 60 fps on medium.”
- Identify your display and target. Note the resolution you plan to use and whether you care most about image detail, smooth motion, or higher settings.
- Find the game’s official requirement tiers. Use its publisher or platform page, and read the performance target attached to each tier rather than relying on a component name alone.
- Check the proposed PC as a complete system. Compare its CPU, GPU, memory, operating system, and storage with the tier that best matches your target.
- For a console, confirm the game and console generation. Do not infer support for a particular console from a listing for a different title or generation.
What else should you compare before buying?
Once compatibility and performance goals are clear, compare the complete setup rather than just the machine’s sticker price.

- Total cost in your region: Check current local listings for the specific PC configuration or console edition. Add a display or storage expansion only if you need one; there is no verified current price comparison here.
- Game library: Confirm that the titles you care about are available on the platform you choose.
- Storage: Check each game’s stated storage requirement and the capacity of the system you are considering. God of War Ragnarök’s listed PC minimum, for example, specifies a 190 GB SSD; that is a requirement for that game, not a general figure for every title.
- Upgrade flexibility: A PC lets you select components, while a console is a standardized hardware target. Consider whether choosing or changing parts matters to you.
- Setup appetite: A PC may involve comparing configurations and adjusting settings. A console avoids much of that component-level decision-making.
Requirements can also be tied to a specific use case beyond a single game. In a July 22, 2026 Xbox Wire article, Xbox lists minimum requirements of 8 GB RAM and 4 GB video memory, and recommended requirements of 16 GB RAM and 8 GB video memory for the backward-compatible titles discussed there. Those figures apply to that named use case, not to all open-world games.
