To choose a niche for a 24/7 YouTube stream that can grow, start with a specific viewer’s recurring need, then check whether people watch that kind of content, whether your channel can offer a distinctive angle, and whether you can keep supplying original or properly licensed material. A broad category such as gaming, music, or study is not a niche by itself. There is no proven viewer-count threshold or formula that guarantees growth; treat niche selection as a set of questions to test, not a prediction.
What makes a niche worth testing?
A useful niche connects three things: a viewer, a repeat reason to watch, and content you can sustain. Write the idea as a sentence: “This stream helps [specific audience] do or enjoy [specific thing] by offering [distinctive format].” For example, “gaming” is broad; a stream for players who want calm, spoiler-free strategy commentary on one type of game is more specific. The example is a positioning prompt, not a claim that the audience exists at a particular scale.
Ask why someone would leave the stream on or come back tomorrow. Background listening, a shared interest, live interaction, or a dependable programming schedule may be part of the answer. If the only reason is that the stream is always on, the format itself may not provide enough value to distinguish it.
How do you validate demand and competition?
- Search the actual viewer need on YouTube. Try several phrases a potential viewer might use, not just the category name. Note what appears in search and which results are live streams, replays, or regular videos. A niche-selection guide recommends search-volume, comparable-stream, and trend checks as research methods; those signals do not guarantee channel growth.
- Inspect comparable live streams. Compare streams serving a similar viewer and use. Note visible concurrent audiences, titles and thumbnails, stream length, chat activity, and the programming or interaction on offer. Treat visible audience numbers as a snapshot, not proof of typical performance or future demand.
- Look for a credible difference. Your distinction might be a particular game or play style, a language or community, a setting, original expertise, a visual identity, or a schedule. Compare like with like: a large general category may contain an underserved sub-niche, while few visible competitors may mean either opportunity or limited interest.
- Check whether the idea holds up over time. List what would run over a normal day and week, who makes it, how it changes, and what viewers can do besides passively watch. A 24/7 schedule is an operating choice, not a prerequisite for testing the niche.
YouTube said that over 30% of its daily logged-in viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. That is broad platform context, not a measure of demand for any particular niche, 24/7 streams, or a new channel (YouTube Blog).

Compare candidate niches before committing
Use the same criteria for each idea. The table is a worksheet, not a ranking: fill in evidence from your own searches and planning rather than assuming one format is inherently better.

| Community or monetization value | Could the format support memberships, sponsorships, audience support, or another genuine benefit? Do not choose based on assumed niche-specific ad rates. |
Candidate formats mentioned in a niche-selection guide include lofi music, ambient sounds, gaming highlights, study streams, ASMR, and talk radio. Use them as prompts to investigate, not as a list of proven growth opportunities. Gaming highlights need a lawful source for gameplay and any other material used; the popularity of a game does not grant rights to every asset or recording.

Can you sustain the content without risking monetization?
Before building a schedule around a loop, decide exactly what viewers will receive and how the material will remain valuable. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams as well as other video formats. They call for original, authentic content and say that repetitive material with little educational value, commentary, narrative, or variation may fail monetization review. Reused material must add significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value; permission alone does not settle YouTube’s separate reused-content assessment. A simple music or ambience loop is not guaranteed to qualify for monetization. Read the current YouTube Channel Monetisation Policies before committing to a format.
For a music or ambient stream, verify that any license explicitly covers continuous YouTube live use, monetized archived replays if you plan to keep them, and the territories where you will broadcast. A generic “royalty-free” label is not enough to establish those permissions. Keep records of licenses and original source files, and check whether claims, restrictions, or permitted use change when a stream is archived.

Choose horizontal or vertical with the viewer experience in mind
YouTube distinguishes horizontal live streams from vertical live feeds. Its current live-stream guidance says vertical live feeds can be discovered and scrolled in the Shorts feed; horizontal streams support clickable links in chat and channel descriptions and live pre-roll and mid-roll ads. Memberships and gifted memberships are listed for both formats. These differences matter if a niche depends on Shorts-feed discovery, links, or particular ad and membership features; check the account’s current Studio options before relying on them. YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console streaming methods. An encoder is one option, not a requirement for niche selection or every kind of channel. Choose the method after you know what the stream needs to show and how you will produce it.

Run a bounded pilot and review what happens
- Choose one narrow proposition. State the intended viewer, repeat need, and distinctive value in one sentence.
- Plan a manageable test. Prepare a scheduled stream or limited pilot before investing in continuous operation. YouTube for Artists recommends testing an unlisted stream before high-investment events; use that as a production check, not as evidence that a niche will grow.
- Watch the right signals. Review who arrives and returns, visible chat or other interaction, which parts of the schedule hold attention, and whether viewers ask for a particular variation. Separate observed audience behavior from guesses about why it happened.
- Track operating friction. Record production time, rights questions, moderation load, encoding or connection problems, and the effort needed to keep the stream useful. A format that attracts interest but cannot be sustained needs a different operating plan.
- Adjust the angle before extending the hours. If the test does not show a clear repeat need or differentiating value, revise the proposition, schedule, or content mix. More uptime alone does not establish that the niche is working.
YouTube for Artists also recommends preserving streams as on-demand videos and using Shorts highlights after music-channel streams. These are tactics to consider when they suit the content, not requirements for every always-on format. See YouTube for Artists.
Plan the operating cost only after the niche is credible
Account for content creation, rights, moderation, equipment or hosting, and the time needed to maintain a useful schedule. Do not select a niche because of an assumed CPM: the available sources do not establish dependable niche-specific revenue forecasts. Hardware video encoders may suit creators choosing an encoder workflow, but software, console, webcam, or hosted methods can fit other channels; buying an encoder is optional.
