How to Choose a Turn-Based RPG or Strategy Game on Steam

A practical way to find a turn-based Steam game that fits your preferred loop, campaign length, challenge, budget, and device.

Start by deciding which kind of turn-based loop you want: building a party and following a story, positioning units in tactical battles, managing a faction or empire, or experimenting with cards and repeatable runs. Then use Steam tags to find candidates, compare their campaigns and features, read reviews for evidence about your priorities, and check compatibility before buying.

Decide what you want to do between turns

“Turn-based RPG” and “turn-based strategy” describe overlapping but different experiences. Pick the activity you want to repeat, rather than relying on one genre label.

  • Build a party and follow a story: look for character development, equipment and skill choices, exploration, and narrative decisions.
  • Plan tactical encounters: focus on unit positioning, squad composition, and the amount of decision-making each battle demands.
  • Manage a larger operation: look for campaign maps, faction or empire management, economies, logistics, or diplomacy.
  • Play in runs or with cards: consider deck-driven systems, procedural runs, and progression that resets or changes between attempts.

These are practical ways to sort games, not an exhaustive Steam taxonomy. Hybrids are common: an RPG can use tactical battles, and a turn-based strategy game can add deckbuilding or character progression.

Turn your preference into a Steam search

  1. Start with a recognizable phrase. Search for a broad term such as “turn-based RPG” or a more specific subgenre. Steam’s turn-based RPG search illustrates how a broad query can produce a mixed set; results and rankings can change over time.
  2. Add tags that describe the whole experience. Combine a genre tag with relevant mechanics, campaign features, or player-support tags—for example, tactical combat and single-player, or strategy and multiplayer. Steam tags cover more than genre: they can describe mechanics, themes, visuals, and player support.
  3. Use filters and sorting to narrow the list. Steam offers sorting options including relevance, release date, name, price, user reviews, and Steam Deck compatibility review date. Choose the sort that answers your immediate question: price to compare current listings, or review sorting to inspect reception.
  4. Open each promising store page. Check its tag profile, description, screenshots or gameplay footage, supported features, and requirements. A tag helps describe how Steam categorizes a game; it does not capture every unusual mechanic or tell you whether the game is good.

Steamworks says developers need at least five tags before launch and recommends up to twenty; only the top twenty are visible to users and used to influence store visibility. Tags can be applied by developers, eligible users, and moderators, and their order and profile can change. Treat tags as a discovery aid, not a fixed or complete verdict. See Steamworks’ Steam Tags guidance.

Compare finalists on the things that shape play

Once you have a manageable shortlist, compare each game against the same questions. Steam’s tag categories are a useful reminder to look beyond the main genre label.

What to compare Questions to ask
Combat Are turns menu-based, grid-based and positional, planned simultaneously, card-driven, or built around another system? How much do you need to consider on each turn?
RPG progression Are party building, skills, equipment, character builds, or narrative choices central attractions?
Strategic scale Are you making decisions about individual encounters, squad missions, a campaign map, an economy, logistics, or diplomacy?
Campaign shape and time Is the game a linear story, open exploration, mission sequence, procedural run, or sandbox? Does that structure suit your available play sessions?
Challenge and replay Are there difficulty options, meaningful retry or loss consequences, campaign variation, room to experiment with builds, or multiplayer competition?
Player support Does it support the mode you want—single-player, co-op, or online versus? Check controller and language support, and whether a launcher or account is required.
Cost and hardware Check the current price for your region, any edition or DLC requirements, system requirements, supported operating systems, and device compatibility.

Read reviews for the question you actually have

A review score is a useful screening cue, but it cannot tell you whether a game suits your preferences. Steam describes its score as a categorization based on the percentage of positive reviews; that percentage is not a prediction of your individual experience. Read Steam’s explanation of User Reviews and treat the aggregate and the review text as different kinds of information.

Look at recent positive and negative reviews that discuss the features you care about. Search for specific evidence about tactical depth, story pacing, difficulty, interface clarity, performance, multiplayer activity, or changes after updates. A review that says a game is “too slow” or “too hard” matters only if it describes what felt slow or difficult and whether that is a drawback for you.

Check Steam Deck and desktop compatibility

On Steam Deck

Check the badge and the detailed compatibility information on the game’s store page. Valve’s categories include Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Verified means the game works great by default; Playable means it works but may need user configuration, such as a control adjustment or touchscreen use for a launcher. Unsupported means Steam does not currently consider it playable on Deck, while Unknown indicates it has not been reviewed. Statuses are specific to each title and can change. Valve’s Steam Deck software troubleshooting guide and Deck Verified overview explain the program. A compatibility badge does not tell you whether the interface, text size, genre, or campaign structure fits your tastes.

Read the store page’s minimum and recommended system requirements and check supported operating systems. Steam notes that compatibility depends on both hardware requirements and operating-system support. A game that matches your genre preferences can still be a poor choice if your system cannot run it comfortably.
