How to Choose a Wi-Fi Router for Wireless PC VR Streaming

A stable 5 GHz network, Wi-Fi 5 or newer, a wired PC connection, and good router placement are the practical starting points for wireless PC VR.

For wireless PC VR, choose a router with a stable 5 GHz network and Wi-Fi 5 or newer, connect the PC to it by Ethernet, and put the router near the headset’s play area. Wi-Fi 6 is a sensible tier for a new purchase; Wi-Fi 6E is optional and only makes sense when your headset and streaming app can use it. No single router model or advertised speed rating guarantees better VR performance.

What router do you need for wireless PC VR?

Steam Link’s published minimum is a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5. Steam’s November 2023 launch guidance recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E, but says neither is required. Check Steam’s current headset and software requirements before setup, since compatibility lists can change.

For other streaming methods, recommendations can differ. VRChat’s guidance for Quest wireless streaming with Steam Link, Air Link, or Virtual Desktop recommends a shared network, preferably 5 GHz on Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. These are recommendations for that Quest use case, not a universal requirement for every PC VR app or headset.

Which Wi-Fi generation should you choose?

Router capability What it means for PC VR
5 GHz, Wi-Fi 5 Meets Steam Link’s stated wireless router minimum.
Wi-Fi 6 A practical choice for a new router; VRChat recommends it for its Quest streaming setup.
Wi-Fi 6E An optional choice, not a universal requirement. Its usefulness depends on whether the headset and streaming app support it and on local network conditions.

Wi-Fi 6E support is not established as necessary for all wireless PC VR. Verify compatibility for your specific headset and app rather than buying on the generation label alone.

TP-Link AXE5400 Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router, 2025 PCMag Editors' Choice
  • Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router - Up to 5400 Mbps WiFi for faster browsing, streaming, gaming and downloading, all at the same time(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps;5 GHz: 2402 Mbps;2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)
  • WiFi 6E Unleashed – The 6 GHz band brings more bandwidth, faster speeds, and near-zero latency; Enables more responsive gaming and video chatting
  • Connect More Devices—True Tri-Band and OFDMA technology increase capacity by 4 times to enable simultaneous transmission to more devices
  • Unique Design, More RAM, Better Processing - A unique housing design provides optimal heat dissipation, combined with a 1.0 GHz dual-core CPU and 512 MB High-Speed Memory, the AXE75 is designed for long-term reliability and performance.
  • EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.

How should you connect and place the router?

  1. Wire the PC to the router or access point. Steam’s launch guidance calls for a wired PC connection, and Steam recommends wired networking where supported. Meta support likewise recommends Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi for the PC.
  2. Connect the headset to the same local network. For Steam Link and Quest streaming, keep the PC and headset on the same network; some app guidance specifies the same subnet as well.
  3. Use the 5 GHz network for the headset. Steam recommends choosing 5 GHz over the more congested 2.4 GHz band for Remote Play.
  4. Put the router close to the play space. Meta support recommends the same room or line of sight, at least one metre above the ground. Reduce obstacles where practical.

Distance, walls, floors, metal, electronics, and nearby wireless networks can affect signal strength, according to Steam’s network advice. Placement and radio conditions therefore matter alongside router specifications.

What should you compare when buying?

  • Band and generation: Confirm 5 GHz and Wi-Fi 5 or newer. Consider Wi-Fi 6 for a new purchase; choose Wi-Fi 6E only if your headset and app support it.
  • Ethernet connectivity: Make sure the router or access point can connect to the PC by cable.
  • Placement options: Check that you can position it near the play area, ideally in the same room or with a clear line of sight.
  • Network topology: Meta support recommends a non-mesh configuration in its guidance. That is not proof that every mesh network fails, nor that a dedicated router is mandatory. Consider this point if troubleshooting Air Link.
  • Practical purchase factors: Compare current price, ports, warranty, and availability in your region using current listings. No model-level specifications, prices, or comparative router tests are established here.

Do not treat an advertised maximum speed as a VR performance guarantee. The guidance supports compatibility and setup criteria, but does not establish measured latency, guaranteed image quality, or a universally best router. A faster broadband subscription is also not shown to improve the local headset-to-PC link; the cited setup advice focuses on the home network and the wired PC connection.

When do other requirements apply?

Microsoft Mixed Reality Link is a related Quest-to-PC streaming feature for productivity, not a general PC VR gaming benchmark. Microsoft specifies gigabit LAN, 802.11ac with 802.11axe recommended, 5 GHz with 6 GHz recommended, and an 80 MHz channel width and 90% signal as recommendations for that feature. It also calls for the Quest and PC to share a network/subnet and notes low signal or 2.4 GHz can cause a pixelated display in this use case. Those figures should not be applied as universal requirements for Air Link or Steam Link.
